Easily one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. I opted for something simple(compared to everything else on the menu) — a bacon, mushroom Swiss burger. My man had the pastrami burger and we shared some fries(plain). SO. DELICIOUS. The flavors were on point — juicy, seasoned burger and fresh, also well-seasoned fries. The flavors were huge. Garlic aioli to assist my patty and truffle oil to cook the mushrooms. So yummy. And that pastrami?! Don’t even get me started — everything was a party in my tummy. We just managed to finish our burgers today. Portions are very generous. Burgers are about $ 9, but you absolutely get what you pay for. All ingredients are quality — bun and all. And they have truffle that can be added to any order — fancy shmancy or what?! I’m so excited for the next time I crave a burger.

You don’t come for the atmosphere. You come for the food, which is heart-attack good. The portions are VERY generous, I usually get two lunches out of one visit, but hey, Mgmt, don’t change a thing. K? We always eat on the patio of the Mexican place three doors down, and watch the crazier people of El Cajon almost get hit by cars in front of the 7 – 11 next door. But like I said, you don’t come for the atmosphere.

Great little burger and fries joint that has a few extra selections like hot dogs as well. The burgers themselves are gigantic and the fries are sized to match. Come hungry, because you’ll need the room to spare. The venue itself is a bit small and they have a deal with the bar across the way for extra seating, but most customers will come here for Take-Out, as they should. Minus 1 star because the burgers are pretty greasy, but if you’re trolling for burgers and fries you’re probably not worried about health; regardless, they have some decent vegetarian options not all of which are heart-threatening. Try the Mac & Cheese patty on anything you order.

No words can explain how delicious this food is. Super flavorful and all the greatest menu options. Service is super friendly along with a comfortable environment to eat at or pick up to go. New year resolution is to come back here every day until I’ve tried everything! The only problem I see here is they are not open 24 hours, haha :)

This is an awesome spot to stop in and get a good burger that’s not from a greasy fast food joint. The name threw me off a little before coming in for the first time but I quickly learned why they went with funkys after seeing all the crazy combinations of stuff they put on hotdogs and burgers. Definitely a menu you can’t find anywhere else. I’ve come in three times now and they haven’t let me down once. They prepare your food right in front of you so you know the patty hasn’t been sitting in a warmer all day. Very friendly customer service. They accept all credit cards without a fee that I’ve noticed, and like I said food is good. The only challenge they might face is that it’s a small restaurant, not a lot of space for dining in. Other than that, really cool spot.

Funky Fries! I’m so sorry I haven’t reviewed you yet! I call this place Funky McFries because I’m sort of an idiot and because I think it’s sort of cute to have a nickname for a restaurant. Or is it pathetic? Regardless, I love grabbing a bite to eat here and we do so often. It’s a very happy compromise for myself and my husband since he loves good hamburgers and I love good french fries. I’m not a big fan of hamburgers and finding something non-burgery at a burger joint is usually a big disappointment. Not here. Their menu is full of seemingly endless possibilities. So, on to the food! Like I mentioned above, I’m not really a burger gal so I actually haven’t tried one of their hamburgers, but my husband has tried several and, as a burger lover himself, finds them absolutely delicious. And they are huge too! He’s got a big big appetite and a burger and side of fries from Funky Fries has him contently«complaining» of being full. I always order some sort of loaded fries. My favorite is the buffalo chicken, and here’s where I was immediately sold on this restaurant: Their chicken is fresh and tastes amazing! As I’ve said in many of my reviews, I’m not a vegetarian, but I am extremely picky when it comes to meat. If it’s even a little bit off or tastes the tiniest bit old or chewy, I’m done with that place forever. I hate dark meat and have trust issues when ordering chicken at restaurants, but Funky Fries came through with perfectly cooked and fresh chicken breast. The chicken is even cut to the perfect size! As I’m sure has been mentioned in other reviews, this is a place best suited for takeout orders. We pretty much have them on speed dial when we need to pick up a quick meal. Depending on the time of day and how busy we are, our food is usually ready for pickup within 10 – 20 minutes and it’s always pipping hot and freshly made. I just noticed on their website they also offer online ordering which I’m now VERYEXCITED about because I love ordering things online. I’m anti-phone and love when I’m given the opportunity to interact mostly with machines. Don’t judge me, humans! Speaking of humans, all the employees at Funky Fries are personable and helpful. To be fair, I call in the order and my husband goes in to pick up while I sit in the car with the dogs, so my only personal interaction with them is over the phone, but they are always very nice to both of us. My husband and I ripped our way through one of their customer loyalty cards in record time and we’re almost done with our latest card. This will continue to be our favorite pickup spot in the area and I’m positive I’ll never run out of new combinations to try. Welcome to the neighborhood, Funky McFries! We’re so happy to have you!

Great service and good portion to $. I got the buffalo chicken fries on tots. The fries weren’t as spicy as I would have liked but it wasn’t unenjoyable. The cheese was piled on, the sour cream was creamy and chicken tasted charbroiled. Tot cooked crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Yum! My friend got the Chili Cheese Mac n Cheese fries. The Mac n Cheese was beyond ooey gooey cheese perfection and the chili really brought it all together. Fries were fried golden and light. Would definitely go again, would recommend going after 1pm to avoid the lunch rush.

Funkin’ good! I ordered the Diablo regular fries and it was topped with grilled chicken, grilled onions, diablo sauce, melted pepper jack cheese, bacon bits, and fresh jalapenos. For $ 9, I was skeptical at first but the portions were HUGE(definitely meant to be shared) and the quality was great. The chicken wasn’t dry and well cooked, the grilled onions were flavorful, and the jalapenos were fresh! I expected the meal to be overly greasy, but to my pleasant surprise, it wasn’t! I asked for fresh onions on top which added a nice refreshing bite to the fries. That diablo sauce was perfect for a spice lover such as myself. It definitely had the kick I so love in spicy food. I didn’t try the burger but my bf who loves burgers enjoyed his Funky OG burger. The place was really clean and well-maintained. The staff was friendly. Parking is really easy. Overall, I highly recommend this place for those that love burgers and fries with a twist.

This is a hidden little gem here at El Cajon! Wonderful burgers, need to try the nacho cheese fries on tots w beef. My friend had the reuben burger and he liked it quite a bit. I usually don’t eat spicy but I just kept eating the tots and the beef bc it was so good. The sauce complements the tots perfectly. Will definitely come back for this little burger joint!

Get the Funk outta here! You would never guess it by just peeking into this tiny spot but the food coming out of this joint is packed with flavor and fun! There are so many different combinations of fries and burgers that you have to come in multiple times just to get a grasp of everything going on! Fast and friendly service, bomb food, and hefty portions! Funky Fries and Burgers isn’t just another burger spot, this place is the real deal. The Mac and cheese and sauces are off the chain. I love seeing a cool place like this in East County!

I came here with the intention of trying the Diablo Burger but got scared off by the warning of the sauce being«funky hot.» I decided to go with the Hangover Burger and was not disappointed by my choice at all. The mixture of fried egg, bacon, and cheese mixed with a perfect seasoned patty was amazing. It was a very nice size to for the price… good value. I also ordered their funky fries and judging by the photos on the wall I thought they were going to be fairly small. So I decided to try the Diablo Fries. What arrived was a massive glorious plate of fries, chicken, jalapeños, and Diablo sauce. It was in one of the to go boxes and it was a very generous serving. Thank goodness I saved these for after the burger. They were BEYOND hot! My mouth was on fire. If you LOVE absolutely spicy food, then get these!

I came here over the weekend to try the food out. Shared an order of the chili + mac and cheese tater tots — ~$ 10 total. Portion was decent but I don’t think the $ 10 is a good price for it if you were to get it for yourself. It was a good amount for sharing. I was really excited to try something from Funky Fries and was pretty satisfied with what we got. The whole combination didn’t really tie together well though in terms of flavor. All I could taste was the chili the whole time. The mac and cheese could be done better with more flavor or quality ingredients. Still an awesome combo and I wish I could try everything else! The day we went, they were apparently out of burgers? I’m not sure, but I just overheard it as people were trying to order that. I wasn’t there for the burgers this time anyway, but hope to be back to try them. From what I see in the pictures, the burgers look delicious. Small place — counter seating and seating at the patio next door. Clean restaurant and quick service. Lots of menu options. A bit out of the way for the usual areas I’m in in San Diego, but I think it was worth a try!

Came here with a friend and decided to see what the hype was about since we were hungry. I was satisfied with the food and customer service! We were rung up by Tina and she was extremely sweet. My friend and I ordered the El Diablo fries(If you love spicy and I mean love then it is for you!). We had to do quite a few water cup runs to soothe the heat… hahaha. We ate outside next to the Mexican restaurant since there was a sign saying it was okay if you purchased from this place. Tina was too kind by bringing out a round of water since she knew that hit the spot. I ordered the southwest Shrimp and steak fries to go for my boyfriend and I snuck in a couple bites and I wish I ate more typing this up… But I will definitely be back sometime soon! Great food, great service guys!

Came here on a Sunday evening… The girl behind the counter was helpful and friendly. We ordered our food. My bad for not checking the receipt, but I didn’t realized until 20 minutes later when our food arrived, that they didn’t include the first think we ordered(a Cali burger). But there was still tons of food, I ended sharing with my hubby… There’s only a few stools along the wall, but apparently the owner of the taco shop next door is the uncle of these guys, so the patio in front of the taco shop was open for us to use… Food took about 20 minutes, so call ahead if you’re in a rush… The bun was huge(like the rest of the burger) light and not overpowering. The patty had a nice grilled flavor, still juicy. They make a patty out of hash browns for the hangover burger! Their fries are crispy and thin cut. Lots of flavor throughout the meal. Big servings… Ingredients tasted fresh… Parking can be tight. A pretty good place. Just wish I was able to try my Cali burger. Like I said, it was missed while ordering, and my fault for not going over the receipt! Update. Ended up coming back the following week and ordering a Cali burger… It did not disappoint! The bun was light and not overpowering… Juicy flavorful patty… And just enough of the toppings. Yum!!!
