Stumbled upon this pub when I was looking for an ATM while at Gilles St Markets one Sunday and noticed that they serve meals from 11am, which is always a bonus when out with little people who can get hungry quite early. There is a $ 10 kids menu with quite a few selections, and also a $ 10 menu for the grown-us between 11am-3pm EVERYDAY. wow, that’s value for a city pub, actually for any café really. As it was a cold, windy day, I came back after the markets with my little girl and two friends and we settled in a cosy corner table. While the Astor does not have a courtyard area, on a cold autumn day, we were happy to be indoors and they had good tunes, so it was a relaxing Sunday lunch for us. The food quality was standard pub grub, enjoyable and good value. Drinks prices at lunch time was average for a city pub. I heard the happy hour is pretty good from 5−7pm on weekdays. Service was friendly and helpful. The female staff who served us offered some coloured pencils and paper and was there to the rescue when my daughter spilled some water. As far as pubs without courtyards go, it’s family friendly at lunch time, so I can see myself returning for more lunches here on a cold day if I’m in the area. They also serve hot drinks.

Was eerily quiet on Summer’s Saturday night when we popped by, which was fine because we were using it as a pit stop for a drink/toilet break on the walk between other places. Seemed like an ok enough place downstairs. Just as we were about to leave a few obvious strippers walked in and headed upstairs for what we assume was a buck’s party(or buck’s «show» as it is in Radelaide) and the quiet was broken by some cheers.

Ok so this is one of the many Casual Pubs around the City of Adelaide Proper. As like most pubs, Friday nights get a little loud especially once the live music kicks in. They have a fairly standard Pub Fare menu, certainly nothing to complain about, but nothing amazing either. They do have the nightly specials(Friday’s us Schnitzel Night) All in all, if you are nearby you can’t go wrong with it if you are after some Pub Grub.

This is a great all rounder pub for meals, drinks and functions. I’ve been to at least 4 functions here — 21sts and Engagements — in their upstairs function room and balcony and their downstairs back room. The atmosphere has always been great, however you’d want a lot of people to fill the upstairs function room successfully! All of the functions I’ve been to have been great fun and I have enjoyed standing on the balcony at various stages of intoxication laughing and catching up with friends. I like this place because it is slightly away from the busy pumping East side — so you’re not overwhelmed with cocky drunks from other places, but you’re so close you can wander from place to place. Aaah, Adelaide. The outside area is a nice spot too, and the food is delicious at good decent prices. A great place to catch up with friends on a Friday night after work.

The Astor is one of my favourite pubs in Adelaide. They have James Squire on tap, which many places do not, and their food is great. I usually go to the Astor once a month with a group, and the Astor is very accommodating, supplying us with table space for 30+ people. Considering the somewhat controversial nature of our group, I’m glad the Astor has kept us coming back for years. They also have Big Buck Hunter, and according to International Pub Rule #1337B, this makes The Astor an awesome pub!

There are not many places left these days where you can get a $ 10 Schnitzel at a decent size. I love my flattened and crumbed chicken and I’m here to say that if the Alehouse down the road is too pricey for you this Friday, check in to the Astor instead. It’s not real pretty, I’ll warn you, so don’t get dolled up to the nines if your only planning to knock back a few here, perfect for after work drinks when a beer is all you need and you don’t care where from. There are some really good function options as well, I’ve been to a few dress up parties in various rooms, the food is good and the overall night is really reasonable so if you’re a bit tight on cash then the Astor is a great option for you. The staff can be a bit too relaxed, if they’re already in a conversation they’ll continue that convo while they serve you, just needs a little fine tuning. biggest selling point for me? 20 $ steak kids.

This place is alright. It’s not the nicest restaurant I’ve ever eaten in, far from it. It’s really not that flash at all, in spite of the attractiveness of the outside of the building itself, which exudes a slightly classier style than the inside. The staff are a bit up and down as far as service is concerned. Again, they’re not terrible, just not all of them are thrilled to be there. But the real reason to go is that you can get a decent feed for not a lot of money. Like, a steak for $ 20. That’s unheard of for a city pub in Melbourne, and I don’t know about Adelaide, but I haven’t found many better deals on my travels thus far. The food is alright, too. I mean, it’s not a fine dining experience, but it’s not that bad, and for the price, it’s pretty damn good.

The Astor is a great place for after-work city drinks on a Friday night. The atmosphere is particularly great on the upstairs balcony on a hot summer’s evening, without being too rowdy. Staff are warm and efficacious; the selection of beer is good and there are some fine local wines on offer. I had a beautiful glass of Shaw & Smith sauvignon blanc at The Astor. A big selling point for the pub is its grub, and its ‘squid for 10 quid’ and $ 10 schnitzel nights are popular. Vegetarians who dislike pumpkin and seek more than the usual suspects of pizza and lasagne for a substantial main may struggle with the menu but it is a dream for meat eaters and pescatarians.
