It was the day before Christmas and the screams of sadness could be heard across the city as students everywhere opened up their Facebook, and read the sad news that Austin was closed, and not just for the year, but for good. Robbed of one last hurrah, a shocked city went in to mourning. Goodbye Tight ass tinnies from the tap, when payday was still a day way Goodbye Tasty toasted sandwiches served with crisps, both the savoury classics, and the new sweet favorites. Goodbye happy hour, and competitions of Paper Scissors Rock or high card draw. Goodbye board games and cards, piled up high. Goodbye SNES. Goodbye retro décor Goodbye dropping ice cubes onto the people waiting at the bar. So lets raise a toastie to Austin & Austin, for all the fun nights and shenanigans he gave to us. I guess we all have to go back to the uni bar now?

I came here for lunch and a cocktail and was not disappointed. Nice airy décor, friendly staff and an upstairs area to chill out and play one of their wide selection of board games. The french toast was delicious, although I didn’t quite get the right cocktail to go with it. The Red Apples was beautifully presented with sliced apples and mint, but the cinammon sugar made it a touch dry for my tastes. I will be back for a toastie or nachos next time!

Returning to university for my post graduate studies gave me a great opportunity to be a student who bums around with notebooks and lecture notes in cafes but with enough money in my pocket to actually frequent said cafes and appear to be studious whilst downing flat whites. Austin & Austin is an interesting mix of brunch and lunch joint whilst also being a cocktail-late-night hangout, something fairly unique for dear rAdelaide. I’ve made this little joint my main go to place during my lecture breaks and have really only visited during the morning and afternoons so can’t comment after dark. A&A has sweet digs slightly off the beaten track with a loft/mezzanine in a warehouse style building styled in a hipster/rockabilly style with turntables on the ground and N64s in the loft. Space can sometimes be a premium, I always prefer to set up on a small table downstairs on the couches as the stools upstairs aren’t quite as comfortable for my achy back. The food menu has a great choice of yummy toasties with crisps on the side as well as a few salads and nacho combos plus some sweeter variants on the good old toastie sammich. I’m a big fan of the goats curd toastie and I swear the guys do something magical to the toast to have it tasting so crisp. The toasties are great for those looking for a breakfast/light lunch at $ 7 – 11 you’ll be satisfied without busting the budget. Veggie options are decent with few vegan options(a few more if you shuffle the menu around) and I find the specials to be interesting and consistently good. Coffee here is generally good, but a bit pricey for my personal tastes, but I still feel that $ 3.50 should be the standard coffee price even if no one else seems to. I find the coffee to have a moderate kick in it and prefer a flat white here compared to an overly milky latte. Decent selection of beers and limited wines and ciders behind the bar. A few locals although I was a touch disappointed not to see some of my favourite locals kicking around. This place on the weekend is brilliant for a lazy session with mates, drag out some board games from the shelf, share some toasties and chill out to the music. Can be loud when busy so be wary of peak times(after 5pm generally) and space can be limited for larger groups.

I went here on the weekend to celebrate my birthday and do something chilled and relaxed! Completely forgot to take pictures, I was having too much fun! It’s very bright, fun, hip and nerdy in a modern way! They had a live DJ playing weird music but it was cool! There’s a wall full of board games you can pick and choose to play with your friends. There’s even Cards Against Humanity there(AUS&US version) it was soo much fun! We were loud and getting really involved with the games we were playing! Definitely an awesome place to start the night, end the night, even a dating place! Drinks were decently priced and they have a HUGE selection of spirits you can choose from which I loved! Totally go back

The camomile tea was average but everything else i have had is delish! It is a warm cosy place to hang out for lunch or casual drinks after a long day! Comfy booths with a smörgåsbord of boardgames to cater to our kiddie sides and posters to remind us that we are never too old to read comics! The spritely barista emma is a sunshine who lights up the room! Love et!

Great atmosphere, affordable and tasty food. Great little hideaway just off Rundle Mall. They even have board games you can break out with your friends. I haven’t tried the home brewed iced tea yet. Ill save for my next visit.

Definitely not your average bar! The addition of old-school gaming consoles(SEGA, Nintendo and a space Invader machine), board/card games makes the place a lot more ‘social’. The place offers a good array of drinks and great service. Was impressed with the inclusion of the ‘Before I Die’ wall, which was started by Candy Chang; which gave some inspiration and some laughs, through what random patrons wrote. The beats were good, but the DJs skills were something to question, as his transitions weren’t smooth and kept bumping the volume too high or too low. Definitely would go back though.

Yep. A hipster bar and doing a great job activating Adelaide’s lane ways. Friday nig hand part of the food and wine Festival so lots happening. Hope they can make it work as we need more places like this. May need a bit more of a vibe to get there.

Hipster central. Close to uni, nice beats. But the positives stop there. My friend got enraged at the fact that beer«pints» were these tiny hipster glasses your grandmother used to keep in the kitchen. There is a nice selection of board games similar to your hipster friendly neighbourhood pub. Nice touch. Selection of beers ok, but no different to other places. Sadly, lacking much pizzazz… Trying too hard?
