Conveniently situated on the nightlife end of Gouger Street, Felafel Stop is an excellent pre-emptive hangover cure. Felafels, yiros, hot dogs, potato fries — all good stuff to soak up that alcohol, praying it doesn’t come back up during the cab ride home. I’ve come here a few times after a big night out, and it’s always seemed to hit the spot. The staff are friendly, and the food is quickly in your hands — so you won’t have to worry about staying on your feet in a queue for too long. I must warn you though — my girlfriend and I got takeaway yiros from here once, and upon eating them when we got home, my girlfriend found a maggot in her food. Though it’s likely that it was scooped up from the salad tray, it was extremely worrying and definitely off-putting. This kind of thing happens from time to time, but it doesn’t hurt to have a close inspection before you dig in.

This place is conveniently located on Gouger St, and has been around since before I moved to Adelaide six years ago. I’ve only had a falafel here once, but I was very pleased with it — lots of salad, tahini AND hummus(extra sesame mmmm), and fresh falafels. This place is a lot cleaner than a lot of yiros/falafel joints around town, which adds to the appeal. Most of the time though, I come here to get baklava and other honey covered sweets. I used to live around the corner on Whitmore Square, and a ‘beau’ of mine used to bring baklava from here when he came over. Impressive! You can buy the baklava individually or by the kilo.

It’s a real gamble opening a non Asian restaurant in Chinatown and surviving, but the Falafel House has managed to do just that. As they say though, «it’s good to be different.» Falafel house serves Falafel’s, meat dishes, but what I normally go there for are the cakes in the window. After a nice dinner in Chinatown if by some miracle I actually have any room left, this the place you’ll find me. The cakes do often change, so don’t expect to go there and have the same thing every time. With that being said, if you can go there and honestly tell me there wasn’t a single thing you would eat then there’s something wrong with you. I have yet to have an actual meal there, so I won’t comment on that part of it. For an after dinner cake and hot chocolate though, it doesn’t get much better than this.
