These sweet Chinese/Taiwanese stuffed pancakes are a great little snack! With several regular flavors ranging from custard, coconut, chocolate, and red bean(not to mention a daily special like lemon custard), you can usually find at least one that everyone enjoys! Custard, lemon custard, and coconut were the unanimous favorites of our group. Although they stay soft and moist for at least a day or so, they are definitely best served hot(if possible, get the freshest ones that have just come off the baking trays). They are now just shy of $ 2 each, which is not bad if you’re getting a flavor you know you love. Others have mentioned something about getting a 2 for 1 deal, but we definitely didn’t have that deal offered to us despite getting 10 of them in just 2 days.

Think O Bun, not O Bahn. I had to try this place as it’s only across the road from work. They remind me of mini pancakes like pikelets but with a filling. I tried red bean and custard, which did not disappoint. They are $ 1.90 each, so it’s cheap, and worth it. Good if you are short on cash and need something to fill you up. The markets can be expensive so this is an easy option. Service is quick.

I saw all these people wandering around the market with expressions of pure glee as they clutched onto small little cakes oozing with custard and decided to find out where such nirvana could be achieved. Enter O Bun Chef. You can understand why even the«chefs» who work here are beaming with happiness. — they are clearly full of these golden nuggets of the dessert world! As everyone else says, you can basically get 2 for 1 at less than $ 3, and yes you will want two. Which two? The custard and red bean. These fluffy pockets of cake filled with warm gooey custard are perfect to keep you going during an intense Central Market shop. Next time you see one of those blissful market patrons they’ll probably be me!

Oh Em Gee! It’s O Bun Chef! So good. I’ve tried all the flavours, they’re all okay, but custard is my favourite. I’m sure it’s probably the same for everybody, like when you see a band, and you could swear the lead singer looked right at you when they sang that one awesome line, but I honestly believe the guy at o bun chef is genuinely stoked to see me. I’m not in there everyday, not even every month, but I swear the polite, friendly vendor recognises me, and is excited to sell me 2 custard ones. Am I in an Asian pastry induced delusion? Or am I being recognised for my years of loyal but sporadic custom? I don’t really care either way, I’m just hungry. And thinking about my next delicious custardy experience.

With humble beginnings as a vendor with a little stall in the middle of the Central Market, O-Bun Chef really has come a long way. When they started out they only offered custard O-Buns. Today they’re a part of the food court and offer, custard, chocolate, cheese, coconut and red bean buns. My girlfriend will traditionally order 2 custard while I order a custard and a coconut. Infact we don’t even call the place O-Bun Chef. If we feel like getting some O-Buns, one of us will ask the other«want some custard»? The O-Bun Chef has expanded to King William St where they have the O-Bun Café. The original stall was hosted by a man and woman. These days the man has the Central Market stall and the woman looks after the King William St store. I have yet to try the café, but they appear to sell a lot more than just O-Buns. They really are a success story, and all that started it was a little O-Bun filled with custard. If you’re in the Central Market you should go and taste exactly why this place has such a good reputation.

O Bun Chef is one of the growing collection of Asian baking specialties/oddities in the Central Markets. In case you are wondering, an O Bun is a small goldren brown, squishy pastry thingey filled with paste. You can get chocolate, coconut, custard, red bean or cheese. I find the idea of cheese kind of horrific, but red bean or custard is delicious. These aren’t my top pick of treats around Gouger St, but occasionally I get a craving for them. The best thing about them is they are made fresh, so you get them hot and soft.

When you find those little food stalls/shops that sell one thing, and that one thing is awesome, then you have hit GOLD! This is definately the case with O Bun Chef in the Central Market Plaza. Located just outside of the major food court, across from the Lamb Spit, O Bun sells little soft pastry disks of amazingness filled with such wonderous contents as Chocolate Paste like substance, Cheese and the mouth watering Custard. Personally, I think all of them except for the custard one taste pretty ordinary(and a couple really crap)…but the custard ones and worth any amount of money charged! Fortunately the price is teeny tiny at $ 1.60 ish. Also, for those who have had bad experience with imitators, these ‘O Buns’ are made fresh right infront of you in custom made grill molds… I want one, buy me an Oompaloompa now Daddy!
