My review was going to be positive, really positive. Then as I was sitting in the room full of books, I overheard a conversation between a male staff member and possibly another staff no longer on shift or to that effect. I’ll get back to that conversation in a minute. I love this place and their cutsie little stairs that lead up to the shop. It’s very clean and neat and the rainbow smörgåsbord of macarons are very inviting. They also make coffee which is a bonus to wash down these sweet little discs of perfection. The coffee here is good and the macarons even more so. However today the salted caramel lacked the saltiness. I love the cookbook area. The selection is amazing and covers everything from baking to every cuisine imaginable. I do feel they could utilise this space and make it feel more warming, the plastic chairs felt awkward and almost sterile. Now back to the conversation… they were having a go at reviewers like myself(unknown to them), that reviewers constantly complained and that too many were unhappy about their breakfasts in particular that the poached eggs were plain. Perhaps reviewers meant what accompanied the eggs? It didn’t have wow factor? I am not to sure and after reading the sea of reviews on said particular review site( Unilocal wasnt mentioned, of course not! We are Unilocaltastic) I didn’t really see the bad feedback they proclaimed to have got? In any case I also heard they are going down a more bakery feel in the offerings for a breakfast menu again in the near future. I always remain honest in my reviews. Some people may take my experience on board others might not care what I have to say. If they feel hard done by customer who have reviewed and that a pattern was emerging, take it on board as a room for improvement and acknowledge the feedback to better your business. And to the male staff member, if you are reading this? Smile at your customers, it helps. There was no warmth or happiness in your customer service.

Macarons galore and a feast for the senses! This place has a macaron in every flavour imaginable and does it god damn well. The macarons consist of a crispy biscuit that is fluffy and light on the inside and has a filling that melts in your mouth like jam when you bite into it. Still to date I have not had better(even compared to Adriano Zumbo in Sydney). The presentation of macaron towers in store and in takeaway boxes(if you pay for it) are lovely and they can make a very pleasant gift for someone’s birthday. Staff are always friendly and willing to chat and are constantly listening to customer feedback. To that point they have now brought in a breakfast and lunch menu(still to try) and a real espresso machine for those visiting for morning tea. Make sure you look up though to find it — it is above the Post Office on Hutt St!

Macrons that will make swoon like a buffoon, and other gibberish words. All home-made macrons, slices, and biscuits that compliment a coffee. They’ve also got a books on offer to appeal to the intellectuals as they stuff down sugary baked goods. It’s a very creative place and has a very appealing style. The buzz around this place is always cloggin’ up Facebook feeds.

Well the vision for this place was clearly stolen from my subconscious. ‘What Would Liz Do?’ They pondered, trying to create a new café idea. ‘Well Liz loves books, and she loves sweets… I know! We’ll combine a macaron café… and The Book Nook! Yes!’(Pump fists in air). Well you’ve won this round, Mac Factory. Eating your macarons is pretty much like sliding along a delicious rainbow(but not in an Anchorman kind of way). Scale the sweet little staircase over the Hutt Street post office to find a whimsical green balcony, where you can go to dessert heaven and read their manifesto: their muses include Keats, David Bowie, and Willy Wonka! The macarons are like fluffy clouds full of orgasmic goo, with flavours like coconut, peppermint, espresso and white chocolate and strawberry. Enjoy them with a lovely pot of tea, pick up a few beautiful dessert books, and thank me, because it was totally my brain that created this dream place. Would Would Liz Do? Eat another macaron. Return of the Mack indeed.

Who doesn’t love Macarons? I’m talking the real deal, not the cakey coconutty thing most people think of when they hear Macaron. A real Macaron should have a crisp Meringue like shell with a slightly chewy centre. It should dissolve in the mouth leaving in it’s wake a textual and taste explosion. The Mac Factory have the best Macarons I’ve tasted outside of France, in every flavour and colour imaginable. My personal favourite is the pistachio. If you happen to pass The Mac Factory, stop in and check out what they have to offer. If you’re like me, you wont be able to stop at one.

Macarons not Macaroons! Sacre bleu they are French after all and what better place than aptly located above a post office with its svelte wrought iron stairs leading up to The Mac Factory, complete with fake lawn landing and a table for two, the whole setting definitely has French styling. Inside is a large display case of Macarons in any colour your heart desires and flavour your taste buds salivate. To the side is a dining room with a large wooden table setting and smouldering chocolate tones to the walls, very inviting and sensual. Walking down the hallway leads into a library, the chocolate coloured bookshelves lined with cooking books, unrivalled by any bookstore. Going further past this area are the loos with original terrazzo! The post office has been there for a long time and the thought of there being such potential for the upstairs to be converted was unimaginable, the current tenants have certainly struck an unlikely jackpot with some lateral thinking! The one item missing from the menu is ‘coffee’! Tea is not an issue or even their new soft serve machine but as the owner stipulates there are plenty of other cafes along Hutt St which offer coffee. Taking the liberty to differ, to sit in the beautiful dining room sipping a nice hot coffee and nibbling a Macaron or two, goes hand in hand, an opportunity surely missed but oh well can’t have everything. For anyone out there who has attempted making these mouth watering temptations, knows the challenge involved, but they are readily available to purchase from $ 1.90 each, which is not too bad considering the price other places charge.
