Tom Yum Goong(Prawns Soup) was my first love of Thai food. I’ve experienced this back when I was a teenager; it was and still is etched in my mind as a soup that hits you with its lime’s fragrance and light spices, a hint of chilies that invite your eyes to dive your spoon into that lightly dotted red clear soup. Lightly, addictive well balanced soup with a hint of spice, sweetness, acidity, Lemongrass, fish sauce and those big Tiger Prawns, hence it will be that signature Thai dish in my mind, albeit the pricey $ 8−12/bowl price average in Melbourne. This restaurant with a big name like Tom Yum is nicely located, great suburb of Melbourne. Nice ambiance, okay interior, pleasant service but sadly their dishes are lacking in punches and presentation, missing that addictive Thai’s balanced spice taste in your palate. I just hope that they’ll do something about it, soon.

You know that kid at school that didn’t have many friends, and you could kind of see why, but you still invited them to the movies occasionally, mostly out of pity(but also cuz their mum gave them lots of $ for lollies)? That’s kind of Tom Yum Thai.(without the lollies) It’s okay. Perfectly decent Thai fare. Not as good as some nearby Thai places by far, but not every place has to knock your socks off. The thing is, it’s always empty. We’ve eaten in a few times and had the place to ourselves, the nice waitstaff fumbling a little, seemingly not used to having actual live humans in the place(sometimes literally fumbling… one time they dropped and broke their eftpos machine when we were paying, poor chap). It seems to do a decent take-away trade, which is good, because otherwise we would marvel at how they stay in business. But if you hate humans and want the peace and quiet of a restaurant to yourselves, this is for you. You might see us there, taking pity on poor little Tom. Give him some love and try it sometime.
