Hong Tam is the humble home to my favourite Phở in Adelaide. It’s easy to miss, tucked into a strip mall on Grand Junction Rd, with weathered signage and very utilitarian décor, but that doesn’t mean anything once you’ve tried their phở! Incredibly cheap, you’ll be looking at ~$ 9 for a bowl of phở you can comfortably fit your head inside, and for added bonus it happens to be the most flavoursome, fresh and delicious noodle soup you’ll get anywhere in Adelaide. All the standard condiments are present, and their chili oil is one of the best I’ve had. The servings of bean sprouts, basil, onion and lemon that are provided are always huge, fresh and very generous. You aren’t coming here for décor, you aren’t coming here for ambiance, you aren’t coming here for a romantic date — you are coming here for soup, and lots of it. LOTS. Be prepared! I’ve tried all the phở I can in Adelaide, and this place is comfortably the winner, for size, taste, authenticity and price, and I will be coming back forever. Their EFTPOS is consistently dodgy, but there is an ATM attached to the Foodland right next to the restaurant, so keep that in mind!
