Simply awful. Since changing hands, Bavarian Bier Café has gone massively downhill. Service is fairly friendly but really slow. The food is well below average. Amongst the 8 of us we ordered a variety of meals. None were cooked as requested. The beef was well overdone and quite expensive. The atmosphere screams low end tourist. We were charged surcharge for eftpos. I’ve never been charged this before. If you sit outside you can enjoy fuel fumes. We will not be back. Hurricanes is around the corner. More expensive but much better value. Run while you can.

After having a few very light beers at a bar down the street we parked ourselves in here for a very nice stout. As we arrived, a dj was getting set up. It was mid-day, but my guess is that the area bars become beach clubs at night, including this one. Unlike the other bars in the area, the dark wood gave this one an old school pub like feel. Like you’d stepped out of Australia and into Germany. Hence«Bavarian» in the name. I saw a lot of scrumptious looking sausage platters pass our table, but we were drinking our dinners. This place definitely has it’s niche, amongst a ton of burger bars in the area… and they have better beer.

As our hostess led us to our table, I pointed out the Happy Hour sign: «5−7 pm everyday, get a 500 ml beer for the price of a 300 ml». When we were seated I mentioned the special to our server«no, we are not doing happy hour today because its a holiday» «but it says everyday» «not today». Fine. I dropped it. The server then went on to tell us about another beer special — $ 5 off a 1L beer, and, since its so big, you can get an extra glass. «In Germany, we don’t share our beer, but here you can.» Except, you can’t. When I ordered a 1L with an extra glass I was told their liquor license didn’t allow the sale of jugs so they couldn’t provide an extra glass. Again, fine, but don’t offer something you can’t honour — again. Food was on par with other BBCs(read: get the pork knuckle). The pork rolls around the table also received good reviews. I don’t know if its new, or if I’ve simply overlooked it in the past, but I liked the option to order a half schnitzel for half the price, as the BBC chain is not known for their restraint in portion sizes. On this occasion, they were kind enough to comp some pretzels for the table, which I assume was to make up for the misleading drink specials. And darn, they make good pretzels. Its no secret I’ll be heading to a BBC next time I get a hankerin’ for a pork knuckle, but I can’t see myself going out of my way for the Bondi location.

OMG, try the Onion RINGS. I am serious. We stopped just to have a drink and munch on some onion rings … the batter on them is amazing.

So after Sculpture By The Sea, it started to rain, out intention originally was to lie on the beach, but this no longer seemed like such an enticing option, so Gonzie decided we should drink more, so we ended up at the Bavarian Bier Café. It was a bit wasted on me really as I don’t particularly like beer, Gonzie does though which was proven by how much he drank. I had a butterscotch schnapps and a couple of glasses of red wine and we shared an enormous pretzel. I don’t know that it is really my kind of thing, but it was okay for a change. I was watching people’s meals served, so much pork, I figure though if you like sausages this is the place to come for the ultimate bangers and mash. The Bavarian Bier café is very well set out though it is a relaxing comfortable environment. Overall I enjoyed myself.

Bavarian Bier Café serves beer. Clean, pure, Bavarian beer, with the consistency of a gurgling mountain stream that trickles through a distillery and delicately cascades into your mouth. Apparently the purity laws established in Bavaria in 1516 and still in effect today, state that there can only be four natural ingredients in a beer — malt, barley, yeast and water. I actually believe this blurb, for the reason that even after a big night on Bavarian booze(to be fair I’ve only ever had two of them), I have never felt seedy or hung-over the next day. Of course that could be as much due to the pleasantry of sitting perched on the edge of Bondi Beach, sipping on steins of beer as the sun goes down and watching weary surfers and swimmers contentedly trudging home… Not the most veg-friendly menu in the world, which is always to be expected from Euro-food so I’ve never gone for dinner, therefore I’ll leave the carnivores out there to speculate on the Bratwurst, Ghoulash and Pork Belly delights.

It’s not my friends faults that they happen to have a relationship with a girl who doesn’t eat meat or drink beer… so when it comes to picking a place like the Bavarian Bier Café to eat and drink at, I’m not the one jumping for joy… But, why miss out on a catch up with friends right? There other things on the menu for people like me — for instance — you can get a glass of wine…(maybe a bit boring) — BUT to get into the spirit a bit more I recommend trying one of their shots(less boring) — they have a great range of schnaps with yummy flavours like apple, butterscotch and peppermint(awesome) — so that you too can join in the alcoholic fun… only thing it’s about $ 6 a shot — so your night outs gonna get expensive…(just warning you). May I also recommend their giant pretzels — why you might ask — because they’re GIANT pretzels and yum! There’s always a good vibe here and it’s a great place to chill with friends by the beach… awesome place on a warm summers night or the midst of Sydney winter.
