Friendly staff go out of their way to make sure you are having an enjoyable meal. Had meatball sub, reminded me of a little café in Brooklyn where I once had one similar. It was nicely toasted on a fresh panini, the sauce was rich without being overbearing and the meatballs themselves were nice and soft. Coffee was really nice and the café sits in an unassuming and unpretentious location in the east

Favoloso is the corner store/café everyone wants on their block. Stocked goods in the deli section include everything from cured meats to gourmet dips and free range eggs, while the takeaway meals are a tasty option for the time poor with paninis and salads plenty. This all red-and-white mod Italian joint serves up tasty breakfasts and lunches throughout the week. A recent visit led me to their namesake ‘Favoloso eggs’ — fried eggs topped with melted provolone, served with toasted bread studded with black olives and scattered with fresh basil. Their coffee, made using La Nuova Era beans, is always creamy and rich. I usually stop by for a morning coffee after braving the crowds lining up at Iggy’s breads over the road, and service can tend to be a little slow. If you’ve opted to sit outside, make sure you let them know that you’ve arrived or it could be a while before your order gets taken.

Favoloso is Italian for Fabulous. Need I say it? Yes this hidden gem certainly lives up to its name. This café/deli/corner store is a fabulous treat. Full of scrummy Italian treats, there’s sweet, savoury and all the things that make your mouth water. The deli section features shelves and fridges stacked with all the usual deli fare: meats, cheeses, dips, olives, breads, pastas and sauces… there’s also all the good sweet stuff and a host of Italian memorabillia and gifts for sale. I recommend grabbing a table in the café and settling in for a while under the Italian posters. The coffee is Italian: rich and strong, and the food… is delicious! Try the toasted ciabatta with ricotta and roasted tomatoes or the meatballs, actually try anything on the menu, it’s all pretty amazing. If you are looking for a great Italian treat, this is the spot for you.
