I first visited The Roastery in Southern River way back in 2011 when it opened, and have been back a few times since. I’m not local to the area anymore so am not usually around at breakfast-time — and if I am, I’m usually lured by the baked eggs at Timber Café — but I was there early on Wednesday so dropped in for a coffee and quick bite to eat. Whenever you drive past The Roastery it always seems to be busy — even at 8:30am on this Wednesday morning it was buzzing. I guess there’s not that much else in the area, but still being busy after five years shows that they’re doing something right. Being open from 7am to 4pm seven days a week might have something to do with it. Service is at the counter, which isn’t immediately obvious, and it took me a little while to find the pile of hidden menus. There were quite a few plates and cups left around to be cleared which didn’t make a fantastic first impression, but this was soon rectified by the staff. The Roastery is the shopfront of artisan roaster Essence of Coffee, and as such you’d expect the coffee to be top class. There’s all manner of coffees on offer, but today I went for my usual boring long mac, which was perfectly decent although didn’t excite me as much as some I’ve had in Perth recently. I wasn’t dying for a second one, if you know what I mean. It was the first time I’ve seen panela in individual packets, which was neat. The food menu has never been particularly extensive at The Roastery, and the current menu includes a selection of simple items such as an egg & bacon roll, eggs on toast, Belgian waffles, granola, banana bread etc. There was also an advertised special of smashed avocado on toast with grilled chorizo and a poached egg for $ 10.50, which I thought was very reasonable. There are also a selection of sweet & savoury items in the counter fridge and a separate lunch menu. I chose the«Rustic Breakfast», with eggs, toast, bacon, hash brown and baked beans. Ah, fond memories of a simple breakfast! It seems forever since I’ve had a breakfast like this, and I’m not ashamed to say that I really enjoyed it. My poached eggs were cooked perfectly, the generous serving of bacon was of high quality, the hash brown wasn’t greasy and it was great to see the return of one of my all-time favourite foods — baked beans from a tin. I understand why people like home-made beans — and hash browns for that matter — but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with going old-school. The best thing about this breakfast was the price, at $ 14.50. Great value, and just as likely to make me return as a complex fried chicken & waffle dish. I don’t think time has been particularly good to The Roastery and I feel that it would struggle if its location was different, however it obviously serves its local market well and there’s nothing wrong with that. The next time I fancy a simple cooked breakfast, it will probably be the first place I think of, and should definitely be considered if you’re in the area and fancy a coffee or something to eat. Recommended.

Cute little local spot with genuinely friendly service and excellent coffee, which is roasted on the premises. They have an all day breakfast menu which is 100x better than anything you could order at Dome across the road, amazing freshly made bagels and a variety of delicious raw treats available. I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you’re in the area

The coffee is great here! Food can be hit and miss! On the weekends they do tend to runout of breakfast menu items by 11. Definitely better than Dome which is across the road as the food Is always fresh! Good place to catch up with friends for brunch or coffee!

I am REALLY picky about my coffee and don’t often hand out the 5 stars but this is some of the best coffee I’ve ever had. Will definitely be returning if I’m around the area again. Great spot.

I have managed to eat here once. Every other time I’ve been it’s always so busy there are no tables. They don’t seem to have enough staff or a quick enough turns round for the demand. The food, coffee and juice was lovely but it’s starting to be a distant memory!!!

Excellent coffee. Delicious bacon. Amazing Waffles. Definitely worth crossing the road a little bit further south and skipping Dome. I can’t wait to come back and try the bagels for lunch.

I love this little café! They have good coffee, yummy milkshakes and waffles. The breakfast items are well priced and tasty but the lunch options are limited to bagels, sandwiches and salads. The service is always friendly, it makes me feel like i’m not in the suburbs. Except you are essentially in a carpark but hey, they’ve made the most of what they’ve got.

I always find it hard to find good coffee and breakfast around the carousel — maddington area so I was excited to try The Roastry … The service was very friendly and the price very good($ 18 for full ‘rustic’ b/fast and coffee). It is probably suitably priced for what you get. Coffee and food are good, not the best in perth or south of the river but good and excellent value for what they are. If I am in the area again at breakfast time I would stop in.

Yet another treasure among my local eateries… this is the place to go for the sheer cool factor that it exudes! It has the wonderful option to eat«clean» with it’s RAWSOME products available, the coffee is probably the best in the area(It could do with being a bit hotter but perhaps I’m just being a pain because I like everything hot and I’m sure most«normal» people, like it just as it is!). The breakfast menu is perfect, from waffles to the yoghurt/berryoats to the classic eggs and bacon combo — whatever you feel like, you will find something to satisfy your hunger. I love that you can buy coffee here, you can take away your treats or you can be cool like me and sit among the locals who of course have loads of swag(perhaps mainly because of the place??) It is just a very trendy place to be, I love that you get freshly squeezed oranje juice served in a mason jar — yep, it’s all about the little things!

Lovely little local coffee shop that would do amazingly wonderful if it were in the city as well. This place makes a great brekkie to bust any hunger. It also serves up great coffee that is presumably roasted at the establishment as well, hence the name. Wonderful, friendly service with a small menu of well prepared breakfasts, salads and pastries.
