Koi Sushi Train has the makings to shake up things on the Perth sushi train market. While you can get some solid traditional offerings with bento and donburi varieties you can get offerings that are not found anywhere else. I can definitely recommend venturing off the well trodden path and trying their special sushi rolls with housemade orange mayonnaise and Koi’s own take on filling combinations. There are combinations like the Success and the Dockers rolls. Other sushi train items include seared salmon and tuna nigiri. Deep fried capers as a garnish is also not uncommon. The staff are wonderfully attentive and judging from conversations with customers there are already regulars. A good sign for a place that’s only been open for two weeks and is probably still navigating the waters of just opening. There’s no liquor license and I’m not sure if there are plans to get one.

Been here twice now. The first time we had sushi of the train which was was very fresh and delicious. I really enjoyed the squid salad. However, the options were a bit limited. I didn’t see anything very much put on the train while we were there. In saying that the second time I went, even though I didn’t get sushi I noted there was very little that was the same as the previous time so it seems to vary between days. My recommendation is go early to have the greatest variety of things to try. The second time I got the lunch time Teriyaki chicken bowl which was okay. Nothing special, but nothing terrible. Possibly a little too much onion and not enough meat but generally pretty standard teriyaki chicken you find at most sushi places. The service was fantastic both times :) In conclusion, it’s quite nice and I will most likely go back, but wasn’t anything to rave about.

Wow, go, you won’t regret it! Yep, that sums up our experience. Review done. Fine, fine, I’ll elaborate for those of you who like more information on our dining experience. I was super excited to try Koi after seeing so many people raving about it on the Cockburn chat. My expectation were absolutely met and surpassed! I was craving Japanese curry so I ordered the pork curry. The vegetables were roasted not boiled and the pork was still crispy not soggy. Japanese curry = winner! N had some items from the sushi kaiten and of course I used my swiftly chopstick skills to get in there and steal some of his lunch too! He had the bbq pork, salmon and avocado, karage, kfc roll and the katsu chicken. All the bits that stole ninja style, were bursting with flavour! We had Japanese rice tea for 2 and they even filled up our tea pot when we finished it. Free refills and awesome tea, tick! All staff were eager to please and asked how our dish were and if they could do anything for us. Our bill total was $ 30. In summary: Service = awesome, tick! Price = more than reasonable, tick! Kaiten = wide range and tasty, tick! Japanese curry = fresh, tick! Location = close to home for us(and close to train station & freeway exit), tick! My curiosity and appetite are satisfied :) Please note, this is the first of 3 Japanese restaurants to open in Cockburn Central. Bento bomb and Heiroku both have opening soon signs but haven’t opened yet.
