Best place we found for fish and chips in Coogee! Huge piece of fish, perfectly breaded and fried without being greasy or oily, and plenty of chips. A great value for the price. The only drawback, it isn’t that big inside. We ate at a table and bench on the sidewalk facing the street without any definition between the restaurant and public sidewalk — no railing or gate. But it was a pretty day and I considered it a ringside seat to life on a Coogee Beach street. Great people watching, a nice breeze, tasty fish… all good!

The food and the price are good, just the place is a bit small and nothing special. 4 stars

Went there as recommended by my in-laws. The restaurant looks normal from outside but when we stpped im and got stormed at with various choice of fish and sauces, I was amazed!!! The fish choices and the seasonings are unique and different from other fish&chips places. You will love it. Recommended blue-eyed with lime &coriander!

I really like the idea of picking out your own fresh slab of fish, and having it cooked right before your eyes. Even the prices are reasonable for Sydney standards, but this of course depends on the type of fish. I saw some of the others came out to $ 30 and above for a meal-sized piece. I went with something that was $ 15 and it tasted super fresh. Marine biology was never a strong suit of mine, so I can’t remember the specific kinds of fish, but there was your usual salmon and sea bass there, along with a bunch I’ve never heard of. I’d give it a solid $ 5 – 10 markup compared to the prices at the grocery stores/supermarkets, so the prices are reasonable. If you’re in the Coogee area and want some good, fresh seafood, A Fish Called Coogee is a solid spot.

Incredible — I created a Unilocal account just so I could review this place. Been here twice — everything we had is fresh, local seafood. Had 3 types of fish, garlic shrimp and squid — plus stir fried greens. My best meal on Sydney!

I have been searching for a small restaurant serving great marinated fresh fish for a long time. And I finally found it! I love how the various fish are all displayed in their marinade and you simply pick and choose what they should grill up. I’ve been here twice in a week just to try all the different options. And so far everything has been amazing. Today I had the Brazilian Barramundi — the flesh was soft and perfect. The garlic shrimp was also divine.

Delicious fresh fish, yummy bok choy stir fry and succulent grilled corn. Only complaint is they don’t take credit and they are expensive.

It’s hard to miss this place when walking up from the beach, it smells really good. No seriously, it smells irresistible. For what appears to be a dark and possibly, dingy store, the exterior says nothing about what is served here. When you enter an array of the freshest seafood waiting to be eaten awaits, from scallops to many different marinated fish fillets, king prawns and squid. There is also a blackboard which lists other food items such as fish and chips, fish burgers and the usual which would be offered at other fish and chip shops. My suggestion is that you try to avoid what you would normally get from the fish and chip shop and order them to cook the fresh seafood instore. The staff are able to perfectly grill and flip everything in the right timing and sequence to ensure your order is cooked flawlessly. I highly recommend the marinated salmon and the scallops, the scallops are to die for, thick, flesh and soft but with the right amount of bite. I also recommend you avoid chips and side salad and get the grilled balinese corn and bok choy side dish. These not only taste better, you get larger serving sizes and fresher food. For the quality of food you are getting, it is good value. Remember, when calculating prices, they add a $ 1 or $ 2 per 100g cooking charge. For 2 large salmons fillets, six scallops, 4 garlic prawns, 2 corns and 1 side of bok choy came to approximately $ 58 dollars, not bad as seafood is expensive to buy raw.

So many freaking things to choose from! :) It’s chaotic at this place and it’s packed. But it’s all worth it. Choose your fish grilled, battered or crumbed and choose your side. Maybe you wanna try the salmon in honey and soy sauce or barramundi in coriander, lime and chili sauce or you might wanna try the scallops in pesto… the list goes on and on and on. if there are no seats available, just choose the take away option and head back to Coogee beach for a relaxed dinner on the beach! Nice!

Coogee may be labelled as Bondi’s chilled cousin, still pestered by backpackers and beer swilling locals, but don’t let the monstrosity of a pub on the corner deter you from a street brimming with savoir faire. If you peer a little closer, places you never knew existed are there for pure consumption. Take ‘A Fish Called Coogee’, totally understated, relaxed atmos and yet the experience is magic. It almost transports you to island living where the fish is caught before your eyes and cooked right in front of you. The only difference, you pick out your fish at the counter. And what a display it is! Seriously good-looking animals in the most delectable sauces. I always think if I couldn’t make this myself, then it’s special. My fave is the Barramundi in a Brazilian sauce. Exquisite fish. Simple, yet elegant, side salad. There’s corn too, charred to perfection. The staff don’t say much, probably because they are busy cooking their asses off, but their happy faces relax you like you’re on a summer holiday. They sometimes smoke out the place however, the open front allows the sea breeze to quickly whisk it away. Best spot to sit is outside on the Balinese style bench. It’s communal eating at its best. Don’t be surprised if the American guy next to you starts chatting about how lucky we are in Oz to have such an array of fresh fish. Walk down to aforementioned pub, grab yourself a Riesling from their surprisingly large wine list and you have yourself one seriously satisfying night out. Any day of the week.
