Being that we work around this area sometimes, I need my morning hit of coffee and these guys deliver. The only reason that they don’t have 5 stars is that my soy milk was burnt. And it really doesn’t taste nice when the coffee has a bitter burnt tang to it :( I also grabbed a banana bread, which was moist and yummy. I don’t know why people get banana bread toasted, it destroys that moist taste of it. I don’t know, maybe I’m weird. I like my banana bread not toasted and squidgy. They have a few tables outside that would be great to sit and people watch as there’s always someone going past at some point along Bourke Street, or to read a book. They have a few tables inside as well, but not enough to hold a huge group. Definitely a great little café to go to with a few friends for some beverages and a bite to eat.

Raspberry ricotta muffin is everything you hope it will be — moist, slightly sweet flavors, and very good warm. The guys behind the counter here clearly love the food they serve — they carefully heated and presented each part of my takeaway order.

Quick summary of the conversation I had with the coolest dude, Mr. Steve H, last time we were at Sur Bourke. Me: You know what? This place is really growing on me. Steve: It’s awesome. I told you so! Me: I know, I know. They’re just so friendly here and the food and coffees are awesome. Steve: Yes, and you can just come hang out here with your laptop for a few hours, get some work done and don’t feel rushed. Me: Yeah, I do love the free Wifi here. Why don’t more cafes around here have that? Steve: Blah blah Sur Bourke is awesome! Me: Yeah, and they are open on Sundays now! Steve: Yeah, until 2pm! Me: Yeah that rocks. I’m putting that in my Unilocal review. Steve: Yeah, Unilocal the hell out of it. Thanks Steve for selling me on the awesomeness of this place.

Sur Bourke is my favourite café to head to no matter what the situation, whether I’m meeting someone for the first time or just relaxing with an excellent coffee. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is one of the few in Sydney which allows you to relax and enjoy the experience. The staff are all amazingly friendly and a group of people I enjoy seeing every day! Try the single origin when you’re there, and keep asking for it. It changes every week or so, which keeps things interesting.

This is now one of my fave cafes to go to on my days off. I couldn’t fault anything really — the Toby’s Estate coffee was great, my round caramel slice was evil and I loved sitting outside on the stools on a sunny afternoon as I watched traffic go by. The only negative I could say is that its located directly in front of a bus stop, but the 389 bus doesn’t go by very often so its ok. Sur Bourke Espresso is run by a charming French guy, so expect comfort food and a beautiful dessert display. There is seating inside and out, with the former being a very cosy option during the colder season, but with summer coming up I can see myself sitting outside with my coffee and basically doing nothing for a while. Perfect. This is quieter and cosier option to the multitude of cafes up the hill towards Victoria Rd. I really hope it gets to stick around, despite all the competition…
