There are no locks on the men’s toilet cubicles. I went and spoke to the manager to ask if there are any facilities with locks, he just shrugged his shoulders and said ‘sorry buddy’. My first and last visit.

The Duke is OK Interesting crowd of people, Perfect place to wait if your going to a gig at the enmore and get there a bit early. There are some pool tables out the back

It’s kind of meh. I’ve been here for a relaxed drink a few times now. It’s just your run of the mill pub. The staff are really nice, beers are a bit cheaper than down the road at the Sly Fox and the place is an absolute mad house before any type of show at the Enmore Theatre. There’s not much that makes it a stand out, but you could do worse if you just want a drink and a chat.

Aw, what’s become of the Duke is a bit sad. The beer on tap selection has always been pretty sparse, but with the recent change in management of the kitchen the food quality has taken a serious nosedive too. It’s an awesome pub for the winter, cozy and complete with a roaring fire. But it really isn’t possible to make up for rubbish food & drink with ambience. Fingers crossed for improvement.

All I really want from a local pub is a good beer garden. Pop your head into The Duke, and you’ve found it. It’s just down the road from The Enmore, which makes it a great spot for a few drinks and a steak before a show. The chips with aioli and the salmon are also good, with portions on the generous side at those good ol’ pub prices. There are a couple of pool tables if you’re more skilled than I am and a bottle shop attached for takeaways. Buses 423 and 428 from the city stop right on Enmore Road, so you’d better fill that glass up again.

A great place to go for a drink before or after a show at The Enmore, the Duke(short for the Duke of Edinburgh) is one pub that hasn’t gone the usual renovations a few years ago to handle outdoor smoking. It already had a beer garden so that took care of that. Hence, the pub is old school, a bit grimy and a little unique in the front bar without the usual Newtown swanky set. At the back there are pool tables which open out to the beer garden and bistro. Food has changed over the years with a fair pub meal always on offer — it went Asian style at one point but it is back to regular pub grub. It can get super busy in summer or if there is a show at The Enmore so be prepared.

The Duke Hotel is just a good old fashioned pub. Situated right next to the Enmore Theatre it’s also generally first choice for people having a pre or post show drink so if you go there during that time it may be hard to find some standing room, let alone a seat! If you don’t go during that time you usually have a choice to sit either in the front bar, the middle area that houses a couple of pool tables or the back beer garden which like most places seems to be most popular so you may need a bit of luck on your side then too. The bistro is also quite good and popular and does open till all hours. On weekends you may even choose to indulge in the breakfast which is available to late afternoon. I’ve done it before and was all the better for it!
