I have a X5E53 that had an oil leak back in August so I took it by BM Tech as they are local and as a walk in they were happy to have a quick look. They weren’t busy at the time so they quickly put it on the hoist and within seconds they diagnosed the issues. Was told 3 gaskets needed replacing and was quoted 1600 $ for parts and labour and only that price to do all 3 at once, if I decided to do them separately I’ll be paying more, was made it out as they was doing me a favour. They also said it needs to be done pretty quick with the amount I was losing so I said I’ll book it in in a few days. Owning a BMW you know to expect a bit more for parts but it just seemed a bit steep so I did some investigations and the parts alone from BMW are only 200 $ so for 4 hours work they quoted me 1400 $? 350 $ an hour labour? So decided to look around before committing and found another local BMW specialist who uses only BMW parts and they quoted me 665 $ including labour for all 3 gaskets, the exact same work. So can only mean 2 things, BM Tech are taking advantage of people or the cheaper place has no idea. Long story short, I had it done at the other mechanic as well as a full service and a few other things and the now the car is great again. Looking at the receipt the itemised labour costs were 1⁄5 cheaper so in my conclusion BM Tech are ripping you off. In ending, if you’re not sure or something just doesn’t seem right it doesn’t hurt to get a second opinion or to shop around, most of the time your gut instincts are right.
