Great bunch of players where you can learn and have fun with chess. Allegro and fight club are great fun and a good way to get a bit of competition practice under your belt!

I can’t play chess, and for a number of years I didn’t even realise I was living just around the corner from the longest running chess club in the Southern Hemisphere. Crazy, I know. But eventually my curiosity got the best of me; what was this fabulous house on the corner? Why does it always have people mulling around the outside? Is it some kind of secret cult?! No, no, it’s just the Melbourne Chess Club. Inside you will find people from all walks of life brought together by their passion for a rather curious game. You could find just about anyone here. There are several weekly events that really bring the crowd in though, including Saturday’s «Ballroom Blitz» for the regular players who don’t have the time to hang around for a whole game, there is a 5-minute time limit. Absolutely anyone is allowed to join the Melbourne Chess Club and the more skilled members are happy to teach anyone and everyone how to play. Even if chess isn’t your cup of tea, I still suggest you check this place out if just for the history. It is open every single day, and has been since 1866. Wow, that’s a whole lotta chess.
