I remember sneaking trips into this place on the way home from school some(read: most) days, and getting the chips. Fast forward to October 2013 and the length of time between visits has been around 20 years. Still got the same smell, same grease and same chicken taste. And I’m not complaining. Occasionally you need to drown yourself in the hedonism of a chicken fast food-er to which this joint is an obvious solution. Bravo for still being around after all these years. And hey — isn’t that the best quality marker of them all? Permanence in the Sydney food scene is fleeting at best, but there are a few family businesses that stick it out. This is one of them. Five dock is full of them actually — the three seperate patisserie’s(all great), the chinese restaurants have all been main stayers on Great North Road. Curiously, the further north(towards Lyons Road) you get, the less permanent they seem to be. But thats where all the trend is. And I’m not trendy. I do enjoy this chicken, although it was a little on the dry side. Salads are typical, but truly, what are you expecting of this place? you can tell what it is when you walk in, and if we follow that rule, then they are one of the best in the inner west.

I feel a bit blue collar writing this but sometimes all I want is a quarter BBQ chicken and chips with gravy and vinegar. And with no secret herbs and spices. Texas Charcoal serve some old skool milk bar BBQ chicken and the chips are thick and fluffy inside. Great comfort food. I hear management has changed and I haven’t been back recently so if anyone has noticed a change, please let me know!
