I like the food, love the beers here however service is the main issue for me. It’s frustrating when venues have this issue as it’s so easy to fix. I think the chefs do great work and sometimes the service is fantastic and sometimes it’s terrible. I’ve been here three times and each time was different service but good food, however the common thread each time was that staff take far too long and forget to come over, forget to return to take your order or don’t return to offer you drinks. It’s one of those venues that tells you it’s full table service but then doesn’t follow through. I wish they would sort this as I do enjoy their food and 2ant to return but not when there is so much great service nearby.

I came here on the weekend with the family to try it out. First impressions was it was a laid back place which looks perfect for a Sunday sesh. We wanted to try some food but thought it was a little pricey for the whole family so decided to just have some drinks. I tried the beer tasting paddle as I couldn’t decide on a beer and wanted to try their whole range. I’m a guy who is a sucker for a Belgian style beer so a hefe is usually my go to. Unfortunately they didn’t seem to offer anything like that but remembering that I was in Australia and not Belgium I gave the beers a red hot go! Can’t say I was that impressed to be honest as my favourite beer turned out to be the mid strength which was actually pretty tasty however I found the rest of the beer to be quite ordinary. I love beer and have tried nearly every brewery in Perth so had pretty high expectations for a place situated in the heart of Freo. My wife ordered a punch which after a couple of reminders to the wait staff had to wait around 20 minutes before she actually received it and it wasn’t even busy. This is my own experience and have heard great things about this place so I guess it just wasn’t my day. Will come back again though to try some food

Staff were wonderful and the water most was lovely on a hot day. We only stopped for a cider but it was just perfect for a hot day while you’re walking through freo. Absolutely delightful!

Wasn’t waiting any longer to get the waitress attention for food so left after 1 drink. There were others waving their arms around trying to get service. Was offered water only to find out we were charged $ 10 for a bottle to which the bar man advised us «is the best water in the world» attitude was not needed. Nice venue it’s a shame about every other part of it

This was mine and my partners first visit to The Monk after walking past it hundreds of times. I’m not sure what stopped us previously because we had a great time! I’ll start with the atmosphere… it was really funky and welcoming. Every seat was a good seat. You didn’t feel like you were squashed up and sharing a table with the people next to you. Nice environment. We had a fantastic waitress who was super familiar with the menu and gave detailed and descriptive answers to all of our questions. Couldn’t thank her enough– it’s a lot of the reason why I’m givingvsuch a high rating We ordered an array of yumminess! It’s not often I go googoo over so many dishes but I was very impressed. We had pork belly, fried chicken, onion bhajis, fried rice and squid! The fried chicken was amazing! What a sauce. I can’t say a bad thing about any of the dishes. We even splashed out on dessert because we couldn’t resist. Fried Apple Pie and Buttermilk Pannacotta. OMG! So good. I am keen to go here again as each day of the week they have specials. Oh… and my partner was pretty impressed by the beer as well. Highly recommended for a cruisy, relaxed meal with great service.

Food is delicious, love their specials nights(always an excuse to go and try something different on the VERY extensive menu). Pizza’s are delicious. Great being in the heart of Freo!

Great service and nice atmosphere for Sunday lunch even though it’s on the bustling cappuccino strip. Food was fresh and tasty, drinks served very quickly and very friendly staff.

I’ll go straight to the point. Been here 3 times against my will & the outcomes were: 1. Got gastro from the weekend Paella. 2. Tiny serving size. 3. Didn’t like the food I ordered. The only nice things I’ll say about this place is: Good cider. Room for prams. Never going again if I can avoid it.

We ordered 4 items to share: Onion Baji — fried a little too long so it mostly tasted like charcoal Fries — actually they were chips but cooked to crispy perfection & delicious Philly Cheesesteak — a classic that they nailed Fried Chicken — small pieces perfectly cooked drowning in an amazing chilli sauce that I wanted to bathe in served with perfect milk buns to mop up the sauce. The beers are great but sadly the ciders were not available. We will be back!

Huge range of gluten free options, nice range of beers, and great atmosphere. Dropped in for dinner on a whim with family and it was perfect. Gluten free options for my coeliac brother, pub grub/American style food for the boys, simple delicious pizza for me. Everything was fresh and tasted great. I got a beer taster too — great range, some fantastic gems and some weird ones too! Definitely visiting again.

When I am served over fried frozen imported rubbery squid rings that are so crispy, they’re like pork crackling, I am not happy. When that is paired with tiny undercooked microwaved chick wings(there’s no way they came from an adult bird) I am really not happy. Add to that the watery and warm blue cheese dressing and celery sticks, one of which looks very much like it has a tooth mark in it, I am ready to call the health inspector. Charging me $ 34 for that rubbish is an insult. The place has a lovely terrace that is probably very nice in the Summer. The beer may or may not be fabulous. But don’t go there for the food. There are plenty of other options in the street far above this standard.

Adorable pub with a great atmosphere. The mulled wine is amazing and I couldn’t recommend it more. If you’re coming for a drink I would recommend the place, but for food or good service I cannot. We waited over an hour for our food only to find out our waitress never put it in, and the kitchen was«now closed». We received our mulled wines for free, great customer service with giving us our wine but we were starving and really came there to eat. The deliciousness of their mulled wine and how adorable the actual establishment is are the only things that leave it having one star. I feel like the wine deserves five but the atrocious nature of the rest of our visit just keeps me from going any higher than one.

Quite an eye catching pub in Fremantle. Really liked the factory meets western design theme. Loved that the have their own microbrewery on site to serve their own beer. The Pale Beer were pretty good too ! Went for dinner with a work mate and were greeted immediately upon walk in. We picked where we sat and were asked straight away for our drinks order. Service was attentive & efficient. We ordered reef pizza & a wagyu beef burger. We split half each to try each dish. Both dishes were pretty good. Not exception but good food! Would go back.

— Cool Brewery — Tasty Beers — Good food and selection — Service isn’t too bad — although Freo Street Art festival was on was quite busy and had to get the waiters attention a few times — Good location Was a nice get together with friends to catch up for a drink and a chin wag. Awesome place and yummy beers and they also have their own wine as well. Price is okay, some are a bit pricey but the food looks good so happy to pay for it :) Will definitely return for a brewski and a bite to eat :)

After exploring Fremantle for Valentine’s day, my partner and I decided to go to the monk for a late lunch and I beer. He heard that the beer was good so that reinforced our choice. We were greeted by a lovely lady that offered us a choice of seating. We went with a spot near the street to people watch. Promptly a second waiter came and took our drinks order, his service was fantastic. We ordered the beer tasting plate to share. The beers are fantastic. Our faces were the wheat beer, the seasonal beer(that had a great undertone of coriander) and the pale ale. Our food was also promptly ordered and served. We ordered the sweet potato chips and seafood pizza. Both were lovely. I found the chips just a tad saltly and would have liked more prawns on the pizza. Overall we had a great experience with good beer, food and service. Will come back again for sure :)

I was impressed with the Monk today. I have been here when it first opened long ago, but since then I believe it’s changed hands. I’d heard it wasn’t as good but I actually think it’s better, based on my experience today. The food was fantastic and the size was more than adequate. I ordered the pork belly and scallops and asked for chips instead of salad. The waiter said that should be ok and I said I was happy to pay the difference. He said that because it was due to an allergy it was ok. He asked if I wanted to upgrade to 4 piece of pork belly and 3 scallops instead of 3 pork belly and 2 scallops. I said yes, but I really didn’t need to! Ashlee R ordered a burger and asked for the feta to be left out but she wanted the mozzarella — he seemed confused and she clarified what she wanted. When our food was served the waiter said they were unable to replace the salad so they gave me a serving of fries. Ashlee R’s burger came out with no cheese! A waitress was able to have this rectified quite quickly. I really like the attentive staff, a waitress and waiter came to check our meals were ok and we were asked a couple of times if we were ok for drinks but Ashlee had to get another bottle of water for our table.

I must say I was very unimpressed by the management of this venue. I was the only person at the back of the venue and I was reading, eating and having a drink happily wanting to say the night. Then they turned all the lights down to an unreadable level and when asked they wouldn’t turn them back up a bit. Utterly rude. There wasn’t a soul in a the back of the place, there was no need for it to be that dark — everyone was outside. If it was a weekend filled with romantic couples it might have made some sense. I can only think that the manager harbours ill will to women who commit the crime of eating and * gasp * drinking alone. I won’t be back.

We went there for a beer on a lazy sunny afternoon. The place was packed but got seated in the sun on the front terrace. It was around 35° but the waiter decided it would be better without the big umbrellas and set out to put everyone in the roasting sun! The seats are old and absolutely uncomfortable(yes, when I go for a drink I do care about the comfort of my rear end!). We were seated closest to the road, perfect if you enjoy breathing in car exhaust while relaxing, I guess. We got a couple of drinks, they were very unoriginal. Same taste as everywhere around here nothing special at all except for their prices — count 11 $ for a pint — yes I know this is Australia but I still find it bloody expensive!
