Honest to god, the best burger I’ve had in Sydney. And it’s like $ 6.00. They always have friendly service and a nice vibe.

Located next to Freshwater beach this small burger shack is swarming with a younger crowd straight from the beach — on a sunny day it seems to be very popular, both for takeaway or eating in(if you can get a table). There is nothing fancy about this place, the menu is as you would expect(burgers, sandwiches and salads) and the food is reasonable and filling. I was impressed with thick slabs of bacon and ample toppings in the burger, although I would have liked the actual beef paddy to be(slightly) bigger, The prices may be slightly high(I paid about $ 9 for a burger, no chips or drink) but I guess you are also paying some for the location. I would return if I am over that way again, although I am also keen to check out some of the other places in the freshwater village area.

You can tell this place does a mean burger. That fair dinkum Aussie kind with beetroot and bacon that’s dripping with fatty goodness. A smallish café that packs a fairly hefty punch in terms of the menu on offer. The Caesar salad it the bomb — loaded to the hilt with the usual goodies and drowning in creamy Caesar sauce… just the way I like it. The brekky fry ups look like hangover heaven. Pity I don’t have one… or I’d tuck right in. The gourmet sangas have been made with love, service is friendly… although the owner can get frazzled and lose his marbles. If you’re at the beach and you’ve got a craving for mixed lollies, they sell little containers for $ 1.50. The perfect mid tan/post surf pick me up. There are a few seats inside but unless you’re going the hangover hog, why wouldn’t you hit the beach with your food haul? … Be prepared to wait. Freshy might be small but it’s a busy beach, so this café caters to a lot of hungry beachgoers come summer. Rolling green lawn outside it the perfect place loiter while you linger.

A beachside café isn’t exactly what springs to mind when thinking of yummy gourmet food. But Freshwater Surf Bar surprises me! In addition to all the old favourites that you’d expect — milkshakes, coffee, chips, burgers -, you can also get a bacon and avocado wrap with a balsamic reduction, or other fancier-sounding things. The food is good too — despite the higher-end options, I order a vanilla milkshake and am filled with child-like delight! At less than $ 5, it’s also a bargain. My companions coffee is good, too. Although the Freshwater Surf Bar is incredibly busy, the service is very quick. It’s a shame that the premises don’t do the food justice. the café is VERY small, and there is nowhere near enough seating for all its patrons on a freakishly hot Sunday in Harbord. But the makeshift chairs and tables outside constructed of milkcarts, are way cute — if slightly uncomfortable. It’s a better choice than inside — too many people in too small a space leads to a noisy and friendly vibe. Ultimately, it’s a great spot — just by the beach with amazing tasting and cheap food that is served quickly. I’d recommend takeaway, or going on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
