Welcome to the block. Glebe Point Road is known as a stellar eat street even by Sydney standards but there are not many celebration level restaurants here. Yes, there are wonderful impromptu date night venues and plenty of great cafes to spend the afternoons over coffee but what about anniversary dinners, promotion celebrations? Well for those big nights, or just a craving for Greek food, there is now Ahgora. The restaurant, a small window front but adequately apportioned space, looks super classy from the street with the dim lighting and geometric wall decorations. My husband and I dined at Ahgora to celebrate the end of my first semester of graduate school. Plus, its a new restaurant and I was dying to go. The cutlery and glassware are all items I wouldn’t mind having in my home which is a compliment. It felt like we had been invited to some rich friends place for dinner, in a good way. We came in a little early because in winter I get hungry at 6pm. Maybe has something to do with the sun going down early. Because of that though we got the waiters full attention for the first half of the meal which was nice. They serve their food, as restaurants are increasingly doing, in share plates and these really are to share. We ordered the meze plate, slow roasted lamb, and haloumi ravioli(you might notice I have a thing for haloumi). Since we were the first guests we were given the option of eating everything all at once or having them staggered and we chose staggered so we got the full taste of each plate before moving on. The mezze was great(we ordered extra pita). We could have eaten a whole bowl of the tzatziki and been happy. I was less keen on the lamb not because of the meat, it was probably the best lamb i’ve had, but the eggplant beneath it did not go well with the saffron yogurt served on the side. All the condiments kind of muddled the dish. However, the lamb itself, so good. Lastly, the haloumi ravioli was an eye opener. Why isn’t this served everywhere? The ravioli was fresh and delicious and served with an amazing pistachio walnut and sage dressing. Do not miss this. Aside from the lamb my only criticism is that overall the meal was pretty high on oil and very rich; guess you can’t fault a Greek restaurant for that though. After the three plates were were too stuffed for dessert(so not like me). I’ll have to find another big occasion to come back and try their baclava. Hope you find a reason to splurge too.
