Last year, I thought I may want to pursue a teaching career. And so I turned to a few local schools in hope of gaining some work experience. I asked the Principal at Greenmount Primary School if I could sit in a few different classrooms to gain a sense of what teaching would involve. I silently prayed it wouldn’t involve an array of objects being astutely thrown at the teacher’s head… As I’m writing this review, you can probably gather that the Principal very kindly and generously said ‘yes’ to my request. And so it happened that I got to experience the culture and social climate of Greenmount Primary School, if only for a few days. I honestly have nothing but good words to say about this unassuming yet tremendous school that is nestled peacefully in the foothills. For starters, I was totally impressed with the continuity in the school. Homework and behaviour(and other policies) are set in place and I think it’s great for kids, parents, and teachers alike. The students have structure and continuity in the policies from year to year. I am told that children respond well to a structured environment so I think the school does itself a massive favour by implementing such policies. I really enjoyed the friendly, easy going and respectful nature of the school environment. The teachers I saw in action genuinely enjoyed their jobs and the kids genuinely enjoyed interacting with their esteemed mentors. I was there at the end of the year and I loved the fact teachers decorated their own Christmas box and lined them up on one of the verandahs. Some of the boxes were overflowing with well wishes from the gorgeous and grateful kids. If I do pursue teaching, I’d love to be involved with this school. And the great thing is I needn’t worry about flying objects.
