Ice-cream mmmmmm. I will also have a soft spot in my heart for ice-cream and this place does it so well. They have an amazing and quirky range of flavours– all made fresh in the shop and offer free tastes to curious passer-byers. On the front of the shop there is a sign that boasts most of the flavours. Some of these are pavlova, Turkish delight, chocolate cookies and cherry ripe. Most of them seem to be based on the popular chocolate bars– but taste a lot better. I need to recommend the snickers. Think the absolute perfect ratio of peanut, caramel and chocolate in an ice cream. A hint for boys– this is the best way to any girl’s heart. Apart from ice cream the shop also sells a modest selection of lollies and chocolates. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing these from here though as there are many brilliant lolly shops in Hahndorf.

There are 2 types of food I associate with Hahndorf: Kransky’s and ice cream. Both are in abundance, which isn’t a bad thing as I love both in equal measure. Treats of Hahndorf focuses on the latter(you can get a kransky elsewhere) and like most ice cream shops offers their own special flavours you’re unlikely to see in other ice cream shops. I was quite taken with the pavlova ice cream, while my partner had her usual bubblegum ice cream. The quality of bubble gum ice cream(or whether or not they actually stock it at all) is her way of telling a good ice cream store from a bad one. The fact that she tried one of the free samples outside the store, then wandered in for a cup of it should say something. I’m not sure if they offer the free samples every day, but if you try one be prepared for a wander into the shop. As well as ice cream they also various sweets and soft drinks that can be found just as easily down the road at the Hahndorf sweet shop. Still, it’s nice to have them here too for convenience.

The food from this shop is a real treat, the ice-cream in particular. The rum ‘n’ raisin ice-cream I’ve had from there was one of the best I’d had in Australia. It tastes so fresh and creamy, the way ice-cream should be, not laced with sugar and preservatives like ice-cream in more commercial chains can be. And the raisins in the ice-cream are so big and juicy. But what’s really good about this ice-cream is the staff drizzle the rum sauce over the top of the ice-cream when it is placed in the container for the assistant to scoop out. Staff make the ice-cream on premises at the nearby Mount Barker Road in Hahndorf and bring it up to town’s the bustling Main Street. Treats of Hahndorf also contains a abundance of confectionery and fizzy soft drinks to appeal to British and American tourists and ex-pats, such as the red-coloured UK soft drink Tizer and US favourite Dr Pepper.
