Simple café in a lovely location under a big Morten bay fig. Good coffee, limited menu, but good simple food.

Nice location, especially on a warm day, enjoy a coffee or treat under leafy greens. Coffee wasn’t bad, fairly priced. Noms are meh, but nothing to turn your nose up. The girl serving is friendly, the guys… it’s the wkend, people are turning up at your location, a smile wouldn’t kill you. Will return, but if I have to deal with continual male broody attitudes will check out other locals.

The most child unfriendly place for miles! I wasn’t allowed inside because I had a three year old with me. I was told that they have office space adjacent to the main café and children would make too much noise so we couldn’t sit inside! By the way, we were just on our in, so it’s not that my son was loud or anything — it’s a general rule!!! I am lost for words!

Under the Story Bridge, tucked away behind a majestic old tree is a little coffee shop called PUK Espresso. In this gorgeous leafy setting, a visit here is an uplifting way to start the day. Unfortunately I have to say that the coffee wasn’t really up to scratch for me. I was the only one in my group drinking black coffee. No one else seemed to mind theirs, but mine was scolding hot and burnt the roof of my mouth even after waiting before sipping. As it cooled the flavour improved marginally, but I didn’t get through half of it. So probably one better suited to the milk drinkers and less for the espresso shot and LB snobs.

Owner/barista a pompous @ss who believes in telling customers off. Will not return for his mediocre coffee again. Can get better in the city anyway.

In a cosy corner almost directly under the Story Bridge is a café where everyone knows your name. This café gives a PUK about its customers and this is evident as I sit on the wooden stools out the front and listen to owner Antonia greet passers by name. «That’s [insert name here],» she says. «She’s a regular. She’ll pop back in after her walk. She grabs a take-away every morning.» As I sit and enjoy my coffee from PUK Espresso in Kangaroo Point, I’m marveled at the sense of community this one little café seems to have encouraged in the area. In fact, given it is an area of Kangaroo Point I fear is often forgotten the surprise lies more in the fact that there IS community here. Rumor has it there’s soon to be a gallery opening alongside PUK and who can deny the shooting gallery target loyalty cards aren’t a grand novelty. Of course, what keeps you coming back here, and what makes me want to return to PUK pronto is the quality of the coffee(Green Cauldron), the friendly banter and blissful location where you can watch the day go by.

In need of a quiet, secluded coffee haunt? Run down to PUK as fast as you can — because its gaining popularity a little too quickly. Nestled at the edge of Kangaroo Point Park and tucked under the Story Bridge, it’s generally out of the way of hoards of caffeine-heads. However, this is all about to change as the shop, connected to the Good Guide’s HQ, is about to be transformed into a market wonderland and pit stop for those thirsty for something a tad stronger than a coffee. West End’s Twilight Markets will be moonlighting at this little café, and the liquid delights of cocktails, wines and sneaky craft brews will be lining the shelves. But for now, it’s a great little nook to pick up a PUKing strong Blackstar Coffee soy latte, teemed with a decadently rich blueberry and chocolate cake and bask in the afternoon sun.

If you don’t PUK around when it comes to coffee, make sure you drop in on this shiny new espresso joint under the shade of one of Brisbane’s most impressive fig trees. The name is inspired by the hockey puck-shaped disc of coffee grounds that’s formed in the espresso machine’s group head after tamping(a good sign when the business title indicates this kind of barista insider knowledge). The coffee itself is Blackstar and they offer their unique Australian-grown coffee harvested from the Byron Bay hinterland. It’s as good as you’d expect from one of Brisbane’s premier boutique roasters and patriots can sip with pride as they savour a premium product grown right in «our own backyard». They also do a few snacks like their decadent choc chip cookies. Oh and speaking of chocolate PUK’s signature hot chocolate made with their very own ganache is to die for!
