The Boys is a cheery, hip, graffiti-covered little nook at the heart of the KG campus, and a lovely spot for a morning coffee or bite of lunch. All the folk who work here are friendly and chatty, and do their best to remember your name and your regular coffee order. Their bacon and egg breakfasts are amazing, and they also do healthy and fresh lunch options like salads, quesadillas, corn beef fritters and other bits and pieces, and lovely cakes. The menu changes daily. They do close early, though – it’s definitely a breakfast and lunch-only option.

A hip space, with stylin’ hosts(staff) and pretty decent coffee should be a recipe for success, and for the most part you could visit The Boys and have a completely decent experience. Unfortunately the times I’ve been they must be having a bad day(we all have them, we’re only human afterall!) because it’s been too hit and miss for me to want to visit this spot regularly.

Ok, I will admit that«The Boys» make pretty good coffee and the design of the place is pretty«hip» looking but frankly, I would rather go the Blue Lotus. This could be because I am more familiar with Blue Lotus and The Boys only opened in my last year of uni but I also find that Blue Lotus offer comfier seats and a more relaxed atmosphere. I am unsure if things have changed but last time I was here, the menu was not very broad and a bit on the pricier side– think $ 10 for a basic open sandwich. But hey, at least these guys know how to make a good coffee. My coffee came out nice and warm with nice tones to it. This place is not very spacious so it can get pretty packed easily and it may be hard to get a table. That is all there is here– tables and chairs, unlike Blue Lotus which offers comfy couch-like seats. Overall, I don’t mind The Boys, it has a nice décor and the coffee here is very well made.

This place packs a hell of a lot of character and style. From the bright graffiti outside the café, to the handwritten menu and seriously good coffee; it’s a great place to watch the world go by. The staff are awesome — relaxed and friendly — and once you’ve ordered at the counter, they bring everything out to you. For solo coffeeheads there’s a vast array of reading material — from papers to a variety of magazines — as well as an expanse of posters advertising upcoming events(such as the Queer Film Festival, NYE celebrations throughout the city and music festivals). The milk in my soy latte was so perfectly textured, I would have ordered another if it wasn’t my fourth coffee for that day. And as for the coffee itself — perfect strength and well-balanced. Seriously, these guys make a damn good coffee. I can only imagine the queues outside this place when uni is in semester(QUT is just up the road), so definitely check it out over the summer!

I love this little café. ‘The Boys’ who own this place started off making coffee at the West End market and they’ve definitely thrown the same enthusiasm into creating their House of Coffee. Of course, there’s heaps more than coffee. The menu board is full of delicious meals, and maybe it’s the student clientele but I don’t think the prices are out of hand either. My breakfast was huge and to die for and the place was full of regulars(also buying takeaway from the cabinet) which is always a good sign. You’ll get a little sass and I like that, this Kelvin Grove café is a foodie destination all on its own.

Right in the middle of Kelvin Grove Urban Village, The Boys House of Coffee is justifiably the busiest shop in the area. Complete with stencilled street art from local artist Reks, The Boys keep everything urban, clean and basic, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the coffee shop. From my experience, being a student at the university up the hill, during the semester and even the holiday season, The Boys is always packed with quite a fashionable patronage. Hipsters, students, and young professionals can always be found diving into The Boys menu for a well-earned feed or alternatively downing cups of café’s own special blend of house coffee. Because The Boys is such a popular hangout you will find that the wait for your order may take a little longer than expected, but its worth the time invested. I ordered a B.R.A.T(Bacon, Rocket, Avocado and Tomato) for $ 10 and lashed out the extra dollar for a fried egg. It was absolutely delicious and for a student quite affordable. That’s another reason for the café’s popularity, the willingness for the owners to have a variety of meals for relatively affordable prices. That’s not to say that there isn’t anything expensive on the menu. For example the Works Breakfast is $ 21 and Eggs Benedict is $ 16. Pretty much, what you pay you get in product. With all the good that can be said about The Boys, its sad to say that often I have found its staff a little too self important. They may work at the most popular joint in the area, have a great product, loyal customers and all the prettiest things hanging around, but if being a bit of a dillhole isn’t on the menu is shouldn’t be dished out to customers. If not for this final point I would gladly give it a 5 rating.
