While Gap Creek Reserve, located in Mt Coot-tha Forest, is a mecca for those who ride mountain bikes, recent upgrades in the area have made it a more pleasant environment for those just seeking a quiet spot for a picnic lunch or a bush walk as well. For years, Gap Creek Road was a dusty dirt road, riddled with pot holes that would seriously challenge the suspension in any car — even 4WDs! However, after months of work and our tax paying dollars contributing to it, Gap Creek Road is now completely sealed from one end to the other and is a joy to drive across. Which means accessing Gap Creek Reserve is a more pleasant experience as well and those who avoided it like a dust-inhaling plague are now discovering its beauty. The area itself is a mountain bikers’ dream with clear, regulated bike trails, challenging climbs and downhill runs and an expansive area to ride in. There are views from the top of hills of the surrounding suburbs like Kenmore and Chapel Hill, with trails that also lead up to the peak of Mt Coot-tha. If you’re more fleet of foot than in the saddle you’ll also find a variety of trails(that are off limits to mountain bikers) well-suited to bush walks with plenty of wildlife to encounter along the way. The Brisbane City Council maintains the Gap Creek Reserve and you’ll find the unisex toilets clean and well-stocked, with the grounds maintained in pristine condition. There’s plenty of parking so get out and get active at the Gap Creek Reserve!
