Urghh it’s Saturday lunch time again and once again we are stuck in this never ending dilemma of where to eat for lunch. We tried going to The Premises but with a baby I simply cannot afford a half hour wait time so we went a few doors down to Fruits of Passion. Thankfully they are not as busy and could accommodate us straight away with a friendly smile and a high chair(Premises don’t even have high chairs!) Their menu looked very enticing with quite unusual offerings like mini sliders, purple potato soup, Middle Eastern brekkie as well as standard fare like omelettes, baked eggs and eggs benny. Hubby ordered Eggs Benny which comes with a twist. Instead of bread under the eggs you get hash browns, which is hubby’s favourite food in the whole wide world. I debated between the soft shell crab slider, boccoccini omelette and the brekkie mezzo platter and finally decided to be a bit unique and order the brekkie mezzo. I love that there are bits and pieces of everything in my mezzo: beautifully fried eggs, hummus dips, olives, pickled turnips, haloumi, tomatoes are right up my alley. What I was most impressed with are the sprinkling of toasted sesame seeds which adds a nutty flavour to the dish. My only gripe was that the hot chocolate was overly, sickly sweet. I guess I am used to having Mörk. Overall, the food is less refined than The Premises but not a bad second choice during busy periods.

Very cool café has power outlets for road warriors with notebooks. Has one of best and unique bircher muesli I have ever had. Very friendly staff, excellent coffee and good ambiance… highly recommend.

Great food prompt and attentive service, I prefer this café over the more popular corner café. The usual fare is provided here, the pancakes with bacon being my favourite. My one small beef, they prop the front door open and this time of year it’s a bit hard to handle otherwise a great café all round, and best of all, I’ve yet to queue to get a seat.

One of the most popular breakfast/brunch spots in the west & busiest amongst all its locals and weekend traffic. All your usual suspects adorn the menu with pancakes(extremely generous helping, you could easily share), Eggs Benedict and Bircher muesli which is bar far my favourite selection. Try to get there early to avoid waiting for a seat… its usually packed.

Fruits of Passion make a damn good breakfast. They use high quality produce that is locally produced where possible. They have insanely good pancakes, but I usually stick to the savoury breakfast options(always making sure to get a side of their organic sausages). The menu is pretty standard in terms of price, spanning between around $ 12 and $ 20 for a meal. One thing to note about Fruits of Passion, though, is that the service can be quite slow, so if you’re in a hurry on a Saturday morning, don’t even bother.

I haven’t eaten here, so I’m just going to talk about the coffee /tea /chai. In case you can’t be bothered reading this whole review: It’s very good. It’s a total myth that the western suburbs of Melbourne are a barren wasteland of good caffeine suppliers, and Fruits of Passion is testament to this claim. It’s like anything you’d get on the other side of the city — a bit of edgy and a good dose of tasty. That said Fruits of Passion is just a few doors away from the much-acclaimed The Premises, so they’ve got some tough competition. Even with this coffee prodigy providing a tall shadow however, they shine. Sure, it’s probably not going to cause mass migration of the slightly snobby eastside masses… but it’s still a pretty darn good drop. And it’s right across from the train station. Woot.
