Took my 2 boys here for lunch. One had a cheese and vegemite sanga, the other had a bacon and egg sanga. Both seemed to be fine. I ordered the black wattle burger combo which was OK. It was a «meal deal» which included chips and a can of drink. She tried to charge me extra for the drink. I’m not keen on those registers that they use. if you don’t pay attention you could be overcharged on a regular basis. The food here is not too bad. The atmosphere on the other hand is mediocre. The girl who served me didn’t have much of a personality either. I don’t want a song and dance when I get served but some warmth would be good.

A regular customer for both lunches, and coffee. Reasonably priced. Very patient with families and pets. Typically very accommodating. Unpretentious.

Very average, glad we only got a single groupon. Almost an hour to get order coffee good but half was in the saucer. Whilst I wouldn’t say the lady was quite rude, she obviously had no desire to make an effort to appear to be polite. Food OK but nothing special. Ordered another coffee because food was taking so long and it arrived 20min after finished my meal :/. Plenty better options around than here.

I often grab a lunchtime baguette from Black Wattle Café thanks to their convenient location, affordable prices and prompt efficient service. On top of that, they always bend over backwards to satisfy the customer. Today I asked if they could do wraps instead of my usual baguettes — the answer was no, they don’t do wraps, but they didn’t tell me this. Instead they told me yes, and by the time I arrived they had purchased wraps locally and were in the middle of preparing them as I arrived to collect my order.

With so many great cafes with great coffee and food and ambience why would you bother going to Black Wattle Café? DON’T! A Scoopon voucher recently enticed me to this café slash snack bar(but more about that later) in Malvern. Step back in time to the 80s and not in a good way and you have encountered a very ordinary breakfast/lunch experience. On entering the first thing that assails your nostrils is not the delicious aroma of freshly brewed espresso but the stale rancid smell of «off» cooking oil. The first time I dropped in here a few weeks previous for a quick coffee/catch-up with a friend I noticed it but it was too cold to sit outside(no external heaters). However skip forward to my breakfast experience it was so bad we had to brave the cold. Add to that a very basic menu(which is fine if you do it well) but the food was ordinary and lacking in creativity. Think 3 slices of toasted white sandwich loaf with weird tasting fried mushrooms(I blame the oil!), partially wilted spinach(some raw and some cooked) and poached eggs(which were cooked well) and some passata style tomato sauce. My partner had the BIg Brekkie which he rated as «nothing exceptional». Coffee 3 out of 5. Ok if you are looking for a homemade sandwich or baguette in a hurry and are in the area(normal deli set-up with pre-prepared sandwich fillings on display) hence the snack bar reference. Don’t bother for breakfast as the prices are comparable to others in the area.
