Who knew there was a clinically insane rock pool hidden at the north end of Maroubra? Not this guy. Find of the year? Quite probably. And I have Mike and Tony at Ompty to thank for this one, as it’s practically their office. Pop over a little headland and thar she blows in all her crystal clear, salty fresh, ocean fed glory. Sunbake on the rocks, take the kids in for a dip, or be a big man on campus and head in when the sea is raging and raging whitewater thunders over the pool every time a set rolls in. Maybe take a snap or two. It’s as picturesque as picturesque can be.

In Melbourne we certainly don’t have anything like the rock pools that are scattered along the coast line in NSW. The Mahon Pool in Maroubra is a beautiful thing that has kept me here for five years now. The winter months in Sydney can be quite isolating but when those first rays of sun splay in, everyone revels in the glory this city provides. Walking across the road with a G&T on a sunny day and having a dip in the ocean rock pool is truly paradise. Every year it gets busier and busier mostly with Europeans as they always recognise the best places to go. I sometimes wish that I could have it all to myself, and on some hot evenings, my wish is granted. There is a street light that alights the glistening pool so you can see if there are any bluebottle jellyfish which would certainly ruin your heavenly evening and you can skinny dip in peace! A wondrous place to visit.
