West Beach- Bathers Pavilion

A relaxed tropical environment in the midst of bustling Melbourne. West Beach offers a comfortable feel footsteps from the ocean within a restored 1920s St Kilda building. I really enjoyed the feel at West Beach, with tasty food and beverages to accompany it’s pleasurable aura

Nice atmosphere right on the beach. Nice variety of good drinks beer and coffee at reasonable prices. Often live music and the service is friendly and efficient. Definitely recommendable.

My first impression late on a Sunday afternoon was that the gen x crowd from Sunday sessions at The Stokehouse have had kids and moved down to The Westie.
A warm Spring day that cooled to a breezy 18 °C saw the place brimming with 3 generation families, gen x couples, big social groups, a couple of dogs, some prams and a ton of kids in bathers mucking about on the beach.
The deck was fully loaded. The sun bed platforms empty, but the deck chairs in the sand were busy with the toddler crowd some of whom had picnic rugs too. You order indoors and there was a long queue. The Westie was seriously understaffed.
Floor staff were efficiently bussing tables and keeping rhings tidy. Drinks came quickly but our snack pizza took nearly an hour. Clearly the kitchen was slammed.
Perhaps there was a problem with the oven because it seemed a raft of pizzas came out all at once. Sadly their service system wasn’t equipped to tell their guests that this might be the case. So there is room for improvement. Had it been a few minutes longer I would have left, asking for a refund.
The pizza itself was fine. Thin crust, garlic and cheese was tasty. The staff were pleasant and the view of kite boarderds mesmerising.
As a local I will go again at a quiter time to see how they go. So you may see an updated review.

Having previously been here for a 30^th, I found this location to be quite awesome. It has a nice outdoor bit that leads to the beach which is perfect for little kids. I don’t remember eating much at this 30^th so I can’t comment on that experience but we went back for a staff lunch on a friday lunch and wow — pretty sure i would be happy to eat anywhere else but here anyday.
It’s kind of a retro looking place with no heating, just a fireplace. Great if you are sitting next to the fireplace. Not so great if you’re not. I don’t love keeping my big jacket on when I get to restaurants, I like to take the jacket off and relax. No relaxing here…
For some reason I ordered the lasagne (it was really cold and i didn’t feel like burgers, pizzas or salads) — it was pretty average. It wasn’t horrible but they must’ve have reheated it and burnt the sides. Ordered a side of chips as well and that was pretty good. But who can mess up hot chips?
The rest of the table didn’t seem to mind their food but nothing looked spectacular to me. Prob won’t be going back in a hurry.

Oh wow this place was disappointing! It’s a nice location and cool place to watch the kiters doing their thing in the evening– so it starts off looking a-​ok.
Things went downhill rapidly. We were one of two parties in the place, which is obviously a bad sign for a Friday night, but we thought to ourselves, «Gosh, it couldn’t be that bad.» Well, yes it was. Went for a lemonade, and it was flat and tasted funny– the syrup solution mix wasn’t right and apparently their CO2 cartridges were needing recharging. Then, I order the children’s hamburger– which I confirm with the girl at the counter is «plain» since it’s a children’s hamburger.
My girlfriend got her not so appetising looking pizza about 15 minutes before anyone else’s main comes, and then my hamburger wasn’t plain at all. It was slathered in mayo and a mystery cheese melted on top. I returned it to the kitchen, and by this point they probably think I am a picky pain in the bottom. So, hamburger gets redone, and the second time was actually a winner– but for too much effort. Nothing else the girls had looked particularly fantastic, and it was generally a quite unappealing place. The only thing that saved the evening was the company of my mates, otherwise it was a total FAIL.
Avoid– there are heaps of other great places in the immediate vicinity!
