Weakest Japanese restaurant with been to in the NB/C/M area. Chicken teriyaki(for my daughter, not me!) was sickly sweet. Tempura was cakey. Not going back especially given all the better options nearby.

Disclaimer: Deep down I’m a huge sushi snob(thanks to da rents), but I eat it all recognizing and respecting the differences in pride, presentation quality etc… If you’re a sushi snob or only care for authentic sushi, then you’ll defo question the menu here like many sushi restaurants. I’ve only taken out from Goemon and they make creative and tasty rolls. The fish is very fresh and the rolls are delicious if you’re after this kind of sushi. A bit pricey yeah, but it’s Mosman.

Goemon calls itself a sushi café, but it’s doing itself a disservice. In my mind, a sushi café is one of those dime-a-dozen counter stores you see in any shopping centre, with stock standard tuna-or-salmon seaweed rolls and a basic offering of over-sized sashimi. Crowd-pleasing and good for a quick lunch, but not gourmet and, I suspect, quite foreign to your average Japanese. Goemon is definitely a step up from this. Café might be a fair term — it is casual and friendly. Whilst the service can be slow, it’s not really a place to linger and chat as the tables are a bit of a squeeze so it can get a bit noisy, and once the meals are served, the staff do exude a bit of ‘closing time’ attitude. That said, it’s good basic Japanese — something on the menu for first-timers through to the connoisseur. BYO makes it reasonable compared to the more fancy Japanese options. A great alternative to yet another green chicken curry.

Goemon is no nonsense Japanese restaurant that’s been kitted out by Japanese Ikea — black, white and red interior. Nothing fussy just what is required. Foreign exchange students as waitresses. Couple of amusing typos on the menu. Elbow to elbow with other diners — the noise can be intense at weekends when the restaurant is busy. Standard stuff. The language barrier means that ordering can be slow and water needs to be requested several times but that’s fine. The food is beautiful. We over order every single time we go. The Tempura Entrée is huge. A complete meal in itself with prawns and vegetables in light crisp tempura. Tuna and Kingfish Carpaccio is so delicate and light that it slips down the throat but is surprisingly satisfying. I love the Salmon and Spicy Leek Wrap too. Far too many things to list. They do banquet menus too which are good for groups but again we found we had way too much food. Apparently you can get too much of a good thing. Goemon is seriously popular and booking is essential most evenings.
