I tried out Restaurant Deux last summer, excited to have another local chef’s hat in town. My first impression was, «wow, the dining room is bright!» Too bright in fact, because with the amount of white in the room and the height of the ceiling, the brightness really detracted from the overall ambience of the room. A real pity. The menu looked very thoughtfully selected and the BYO is a nice option, especially if you have a group, but there is certainly a good selection of wines available. Restaurant Deux is, in my opinion, more suited to a group, because again, the room just didn’t give any feeling of intimacy for a couple, and we had a relatively secluded table, on the inside right wall. The food itself was good, if a little underwhelming. There is a small but thoughtful menu. My beef was solid, but I wasn’t blown away. My dining partner’s fish was definitely over-seasoned. In contrast, the potato side(pommes purée) was underseasoned. The thing is, it wasn’t a bad meal by any stretch of the imagination. It just didn’t live up to the standard I’d expect from a Chef’s hat restaurant, or indeed, the prices. To illustrate, neither my dining partner nor I commented much about the dining experience until several weeks later, when we both admitted that we hadn’t been that impressed by the food. The one thing that did shine was the service, certainly the staff did a great job all night and were ever present, but unintrusive. To summarise, I won’t say I wouldn’t eat here again, I most probably will, just that I’m not particularly excited about the prospect of it.
