You know how you see someone and they seem modest and retiring? But then, maybe they invite you to their house and-Whoa Nellie!-they have got all kinds of interesting things sitting on shelves from places you’ve never heard of, much less been to. Well, Tony and Mark’s is the the produce shop equivalent of that person. You park and walk up to the entrance. Your first impression is, «Gee, they look pretty small.», as you see a few tables with maybe 4 – 5 items on display. Step inside and OMG – you are in the Disneyland of fruit & veg. You want it – they’ve got it… or dammit, they’ll get it for you. I was on a mission – spaghetti squash(AKA in Australia, vegetable spaghetti). This was no small task. I have been looking for it for almost 8 years here in Adelaide. Finally, on a website I found a referral to Tony & Mark’s – according to the website, they carried it. So, with high hopes(I had already bragged to my wife that I’d finally found it) I went in on a Monday. I wandered up and down the aisles, gobsmacked at the variety and quality of what they had on offer. Frankly, they make the fruit and veggies on offer at the Central Market look a little like leftovers from the back of the produce truck. But, alas, no spaghetti squash. At least I couldn’t find it. So I asked. The fellow putting out onions said he didn’t think they had any on hand, but that I should follow him and we’d check. Nope, none in stock. «Wait here a minute,» he said, and headed off. He came back in a couple of minutes and said, «We’ll be able to buy some tomorrow, would you like us to do that and to hold some for you?» I had to pinch myself – this level of customer service is uncommon here in Adelaide. I kept myself from blurting out, «Hell yes, dude!», and mumbled, «Yes, please – I’ll be back on Wednesday.» So back I went on Wednesday, and there they were. Fresh and gorgeous, just waiting for me. As Frank(Zappa) and the Mothers used to say, «Call any vegetable, call it by name and the chances are it will respond to you.» [Check it out, it’s on the Billy the Mountain album]. At Tony & Mark’s it is true – you CAN call any vegetable. Bonus Spaghetti Sauce Recipe Tip: Cut the spaghetti squash in half, place face down on baking dish and roast in the oven @ 160 for 45 minutes-until soft. Let cool, and then shred the«spaghetti» into a bowl with a fork. Take three herbed chicken sausages and cut into 2 cm chunks, then roll them into little meatballs and brown them in a large non-stick skillet. Add a jar of your favourite veggie based spaghetti sauce, simmer for 15 minutes. Top the spaghetti squash with the sauce and meatballs, add shredded Parmesan cheese and you have a pretty low-calorie, scrumptious«bachelor gourmet» cooking dish. Eat drink and be merry, but not too much! JD

I am so lucky to have this fresh fruit & veggie shop near me. It must be good as no matter what time of day there are customers lining up. They rearranged the store a few years back and it looks cleaner and fresher. My disappointment is that I have to get through the line of customers the long way(the only way) just to get to the flower area which I must say is impressive. Perhaps they could create a quick entry via the exit for the flower area.

Tony and Marks are the Best! I am yet to find a local Greengrocer in Adelaide that sells local stock super fresh to compare with.(So much so I travel across town to get the freshest fruit and veg for myself and business!!) At Tony & Mark’s you’re always guaranteed it’s fresh, the amount of stock they turn over in a day, let alone a week would be mind boggling! … did I mention FREECOFFEE whilst you shop??? Just help yourself to the self grinding coffee, hot chocolate and dispensing machine at the back! ;)

This place is purely amazing, they have, without a doubt, the biggest, most complete, freshest range of fruit and vegetables of any shop I’ve ever been to in my life(44 years, so far, and a prolific shopped :)) There are bargains to be had in seasonal fruit — overall you’ll pay a little more than supermarket prices on most produce, but for the quality and the range it’s absolutely worth it. Tony & Marks doesn’t just stop at the Fruit and Veg though — they’ve also got a long row of refrigerators offering cheese, sliced meats, frozen products, ready to cook offerings, dairy products, dips, pasta & sauces, etc — a veritable store within a store. I recommend shopping here — it’s very hard to go elsewhere once you’ve had the experience.
