Finally managed to get a booking(last minute whilst having a drink at the bar!). And this will become our local for comfort food now it is wet and cold outside. We both had steak, cooked perfectly by the kitchen(you can cook your own apparently), and a small side of garden salad(big enough for two sharing!), and the comfort food pinnacle of Mac n cheese. Note: order your drinks at the bar, your food at the kitchen counter and pay as you order.

Best Steak Sandwich I can remember! It was open which to some is controversial, but the filling was so good I was glad not to have an extra big chunk of bread. Steak charred to perfection with tasty jus(and plenty of it), combined with chipotle mayo worked well, a taste sensation! Chips good and colleague had a burger which was just as impressive. Great service — was at table despite normally having to order at counter here. Certainly competes with the more fancy looking feline pub around the corner.

I’ve been back a few times since my last review. This time we started with Turkish Bread with Dukkah($ 7.90). The three huge pieces of bread were perfect to soak up the oil and the Dukkah was yummy. The pork belly($ 26.90) is still great. My friend ordered the Thai Salad($ 24.90). Everything washed down with a glass of Bird in Hand sparkling($ 9.50) and Merrill Rose($ 7.00). It’s a pity that they don’t serve any decent sparkling red by the glass, so would be nice to see something other than Seaview on the wine list. We had table service the whole time, and only had to go to the bar to pay after our meal. Maybe that was because it was quiet for a Monday lunch, and I think that The British was a great way to start my week.

The British Hotel was selected by our group of 4 who were specifically after a carnivorous dinner. Respectively we ordered kangaroo, rib eye, scotch fillet, and pork belly plus 2 entrees. Every diner was pleased with their choice and the tasty sides and sauces added to the meal rather than detracting from our meat-fest. The wine list was extensive, but having to walk into the front bar every time you wished to order another drink was slightly inconvenient. The bistro was pleasant in a rustic sort of way, without feeling over the top for a Wednesday night pub dinner. Mains were approx $ 26-$ 32. Good value for money if you have a steak hankering without an exorbitant price tag.

Had a work dinner there, excellent food the lamb steak was cooked perfectly. The pumpkin, pine nut and baby spinach salad had to be bought separately but fed a few on the table. Good wine selection. Did close early but they didn’t push us out, however did turn the coffee machine off early. If you like cooking your own meat try the hot plate and grill available to customers.

If you don’t like the British then you probably hate kitties. Or maybe you’re not particularly fond of alcohol, in which case I retract my ‘kitty hater’ comment. I’ll add a bit about the dichotomy between the restaurant and the bar. The bistro’s out back in a covered yet semi-outdoor space. And the experience is vastly different from that of the pub. The picnic table seating is casual, the restaurant is self-described as casual, but the menu is definitely at the top end of casual, with words like: ‘braised’ ‘chargrilled’ and ‘slow roasted.’ Mains are in the $ 20 — $ 30 range. It’s carnivorous, anyone not used to a crap-ton of meat in their diet may be overwhelmed. The pub bit is much more laid back, with: nooks, crannies, pool, darts and sports on TV. Cheap counter meals are served for between $ 15 — $ 20.

The British Hotel gets a visit from my family and I annually on Fathers day. We meet my mums side here because it’s central, there’s something for everyone and we all like it. Of course the others have already mentioned being able to cook your own steak on the BBQ provided which i think is a great idea and adds to the casual laid back atmosphere. They’ve also banished the potential problem of graffiti in the bathrooms by lining the walls with chalk boards, so there’s still always something to read while you’re in there, or write something of your own. I also like that you are sitting out under a pergola so there’s natural light and fresh air. Like I said, we come here every year and it’s been great, but the September just gone we had a problem with one of the orders and someone got forgotten. We weren’t sure if it was our fault or theirs but they eventually offered the meal to be made. Mistakes happen, so I hope we still decide to come back here this year.

An old Adelaide Uni student haunt of the 70s, the British has a solid set of regulars from the working and studying crowd. Without all the kitsch of an Irish Pub, the stained glass windows and carved wooden furnishing of the British exemplify the place as a classic, warm Pub. This is one of the oldest, most consistent licensed premises in town and is proud of it. Flashy function rooms accompany the bar lounge and catering is on offer for whatever you’re planning. The drinks are as you’d expect in a proper pub. Good wines and frosty tap beers are ready for the taking. I recommend grabbing a cocktail from the bar and bunkering down by the fire. Varied meals are on offer and stray from traditional pub cuisine of steak and salad or a chicken parmie. Expect a mouth watering menu of mediterranean design and a solid range of fresh bbq options. If you feel up to it you can even cook a cut yourself. Prices are reasonable for whats on offer and sit in the $ 20 – 30 range.

You will be forgiven if you forget about the British when pub hopping around North Adelaide. It is a bit of a hidden gem in the pub world, and since it has been awhile since I have spent an evening here(although from memory, it was alright), I think I am just going to comment on the day time ambience, and more importantly the food. I am not a huge demolisher of steak and I think this is because it is never quite rare enough for my liking. The British is currently the only place in Adelaide where I will happily have my steak, and eat it too. What is unique to the British is that you have the option to prepare your own stake in an impressive outdoor setting. You are given the raw meat from the bistro and then proceed to do whatever you want with it. No more well done steak for me, or under cooked steak for someone else. It is also highly entertaining as I recall my friend nearly caught on fire once. Don’t worry, slight exaggeration. If you are not keen on cooking your own meal and have specifically gone to eat out NOT to prepare your own meal(following?), then rest a sure that the chefs are not just strategically placed in the kitchen to look pretty. They will prepare your steak or whatever you choose to order accordingly.
