The fried chicken burger made me smile, I mean, really smile. That’s all I have to say. Salud!

Used to be amazing but seem to have downgraded their chips and now not worth it.

Salt seemed to be one of the few places in North Melbourne that had a crowd after work and walking past, the smell lured me inside. Plenty of people visited and many more people ordered takeaway. We ordered the following: Grilled calamari — best juicy thick calamari ever! Will be getting this again($ 8) Pulled beef tacos — not my favourite, but it was pretty filling. The flavour was slight different from what I was expecting and the beef had so much juice that the whole taco fell apart easily(2 tacos for $ 9). Grilled flake and chip pack — fresh fish and perfectly done salty chips($ 11.50) Next time I will be trying the Loaded Fries — shoestring fries topped with pulled beef, and more goodies. Also, there is a heater if you sit outside and the indoor area offers counter and table seating.

Every neighbourhood had its local fish and chip shop but the North Melbourne area has been a bit lacking for good options, until now. From the team behind the popular local Town Hall Hotel, Salt brings quality seafood to bustling Errol Street. Previously another fish and chip shop, Salt has completely renovated the interior with a sweeping tiled counter and bar seating surrounding the kitchen area and tables along the wall on one side. The timber furnishings and hanging lighting is almost reminiscent of a café. Outdoor communal benches complete the overall concept of a fish and chip shop that you can go to sit down and hang out at. The food menu consists of the usual seafood fare — fish, dim sims, potato cakes, calamari strips, scallops, etc. — but Salt goes a step further and introduces a range of burgers, tacos and skewers to the mix. There are also sides of chips, rice, salads or vegetables to go with these(including the fish), providing some healthier dining options. Taking things even further, and its name is a bit of a giveaway here, Salt offers not one, but ten different choices of salt. Murray River pink salt, Yakima applewood smoked salt and black truffle salt are just a few of choices on offers. Admittedly, on my first visit I was so marvelled by this concept of different salts that I went around and tried every single one on my chips. After visiting a few times, it should be noted that due to the popularity of being a new fish and chip shop that had opened in the area, wait times can sometimes be upwards of 15 minutes. The fish portion sizes are also a little on the small side, but coupled with sides or in a dinner pack it makes a decent sized meal. Salt fills the hole of a much needed fish and chip shop in the neighbourhood and I look forward to returning again and sampling the burgers and tacos.

Salt, that’s the name of this fish and chip shop, and as the name may very likely indicate they have plenty of it. As a joint venture between the chefs and owners from the Town Hall a couple of stores down, they really took what was once a poorly executed fish and chip shop and transformed it into a little gem. Clean white tiles, hints of turquoise and wood in the furniture and the wicked wallpaper really takes this fish and chip shop’s mood from cheap to simply delightful. Serving up traditional fish and chips with dim sims and potato cakes which are delicious on their own, Salt also make burgers that I have yet to try but it won’t be long before I do and update this review. As mentioned earlier the name of this place is indicative that they appreciate all type of salts from all parts of the world. Yakima apple wood smoked salt, black truffle salt and the Persian blue salt are just to name a few and my current favourites. The salts are distributed around the store and you simply have to pick a grinder up and salt to your hearts content. As well as salts, Salt has devised a hard decision making moment with their large selection of complementary sauces which is well… Just yum! They have truly taken the basics of a quality fish and chips and added their own twist with out taking away from the essentials, juicy fish and salty fries! oh and the prices are very fair, ordered the fish and chips for two which comes with dim sims and potato cakes all for $ 19.50. Bargain! This fish and chip shop gets a 5 star in my books and is now my clear favourite in Melbourne hands down. Enjoy!
