It’s nice to occasionally partake in deep fried fowl. I’m from the states where its a specialty everywhere from ma’s kitchen to the gas station. Had the pleasure of visitng Busan last year and was pleasantly surprised to learn that fried chicken is a thing there too… and its good. especially with beer. Anyway, point being that I know my way around the hen house. The fried chicken at Sun CAfe is decent. The cuts are classically Korean-miscellaneous bits and bobs occasionally recognizable as cut from a wing, thigh, leg, or rarely a breast, but more often seems a bird or two has been ruthlessly chopped up. Thus, the platter, while generous in quantity, may include some bits of questionable quality. The breading is delicate and lightly applied — no doughy blobs encountered. The finish is crisp and crunchy. I’ve had the chicken platter and the green salad with chicken. The salad was freshly prepared with fresh veggies, a sweet savory vinaigrette type dressing, and the added bits of fried chicken made it a legitimate main coarse. I think the chicken platter was $ 30. Plenty of food for two but if you want to have other things with your chicken, your gonna end up with leftovers. There is an upstairs dinning room that seems more geared towards Korean bbq(DIY at the table). You can eat on the balcony too but thanks to the Nanny Nation of Perth, the balcony is not licensed. The have a small selection of beer(Cass, no Hite) and a small bar.

What a cool place! I was taken here by a couple of mates, who wouldn’t stop raving about the food here and now I know why. The service was fantastic, just press the button on your table and the waitstaff appear out of nowhere to aid you in your decision. The drinks are cheap and for bonus points go the crisp Korean beer Hite, especially if you are going down the spicy food route. So I let my mates choose the food as they are the regulars and to be honest the whole menu looked great so I wasn’t concerned in the slightest. We ordered the Kimchi pancake, which is a must if you are going to any Korean eatery as they are always delicious. Then we had the mixed fried chicken platter; just an abundance of food on this impressive dish! The pletter had salad, chips and radish cubes to boot. We finished with a spicy chicken dish, where tender chicken morsels were bathed in a spicy sauce and topped with cheese. There were three hungry guys eating these dishes and there was still leftovers, needless to say the portion size at this place is more than generous. Good service, great portion sizes of delicious food and K-pop playing on the tv, what more could you ask for in a casual Korean restaurant!

The Sun BBQ building was previously occupied by Barocco Restaurant and later Hana BBQ. The owner told me that they had been open for about a year and was not connected to Hana BBQ. The building has been split into two different dining areas– downstairs offers a Korean fusion café experience, while upstairs is dedicated to Korean BBQ. Upstairs was really busy and bustling on the evening we went… always a good sign! Take Me To Foodie Heaven had authored the only blog post on Urbanspoon and had given a handy heads up about the storage stools. The stools are not only for sitting but if you open the lid, they can be used to store your stuff(very cool!). I was taking photos of the stools when three of my group arrived. It must have looked really odd but I think once I explained myself, they understood my fascination. Another cool thing about Sun BBQ are the electronic bells on the tables. I understand that these are very common in Korea and have noticed many Korean restaurants in Perth have brought the technology to Perth. I quite like it — there’s nothing worse than being interrupted mid-conversation or being unable to get the attention of waitstaff. The group was starving and also not very familiar with the restaurant, so we took the advice of the Manager(owner?) and ordered two Wagyu Beef Set menus. The sets came with an array of side dishes, rice, a basket of lettuce, soup(we chose Miso and Kimchi Soup) and of course the meat platter. We were also served a kimchi pancake that we didn’t order. I’m not sure if this was because we ordered two set menus, if they were feeling generous or if it’s because he knew we were Korean adoptees*. *I was at a Korean adoptee dinner where one of the other adoptees who speaks Korean told the waitress that we should get free extra kimchi because we were Korean adoptees. I think it might have worked and we got free kimchi. The waitstaff were very efficient but if you want to talk to someone, you need to speak to the guy(owner/manager?). He’s the only one who seemed to want to speak English and was very knowledgeable and helpful. Would I return? For sure! The portions were generous and the meat was good quality and very tasty. For $ 28 a head(excluding drinks), I think Sun BBQ represented very good value for money. My only gripe is that they didn’t not have my two favourite dishes. The first being japchae, a lovely sesame mushroom noodle dish and the other a bean spout side dish(sukjunamul).

I often pass Sun café and I always wondered what type of food they served. I didn’t bother trying it for ages because it didn’t appear to be too busy. Now that I have given it a chance I can say that I’ve been missing out! The menu an interesting fusion of different foods. We ordered Pork belly with spicy kimchi, beef bulgolgi and pulled duck! The pork belly was melt in your mouth delicious, bulgolgi full of flavour and the duck was not bad but the other two really were yummy. Prices were really reasonable all pretty much under $ 25 and I spotted quite a few under $ 20. Service was prompt and friendly, seating was mismatched cute and the music was not too loud in the background and pleasant. I even noticed to the side there was a little shop operating full of interesting clothes and knick knacks. I love this place for it’s quirky charm and great menu and for the fact it is a little different from most places. I will return again.
