I was horrified to realise I hadn’t reviewed Pure Pie yet. Sorry universe — I have failed you. I am a little bit of a pastry junkie. And I dig sausage rolls. And pies. Therefore Pure Pie is the equivalent of pie utopia for me. I am still working my way for the menu, but can advise all variations have delicious, crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth, pasty that encases gooey fillings with a twist. I adored — literally ADORED the lamb and rosemary. And the chicken and corn was a parcel of awesomeness too. The port and fennel sausage roll is also sensational. You can get small pies to eat in store(recommend them delicately flavoured with relish), or you can go the whole hog and get family-size pie for takeaway. I think you’re supposed to share the family-size ones? ;) The chilli, feta and spinach family pie was fabulous, but the biggest rave I would have is for the apple and rhuburb pie. I have taken this pie out to dinner parties with vanilla ice cream as the dessert and everyone — and I literally mean EVERYONE — gushes about how amazing it is. Highly highly recommend this place if you’re after a guilty pie indulgence, or need to pick up a family size pie for dinner or the dessert apple and rhuburb cake as an apology for someone. They will forgive you. They’ll probably hug you too.

As previously mentioned and consistent in all prior reviews, Pure pie is a little more pricey than the average pie, but well worth the indulgence. The pies here, are of course, of a much higher qaulity than the average mass produced gunk and you will definitely find that in the taste. There’s about 7 choices for savory pie, all of which are as good as each other, and all of which have the genuine«Homemade» taste with real ingredients. Taste, ingredients and qaulity well above the rest. Found at the periphery of bay street heading towards city road.

To find truly amazing pies and sausage rolls, you typically need to leave the city and head to an old fashioned country bakery. Unless you go to Pure Pie in Port Melbourne. Best pies in Melbourne. I’m calling it! They have lots of flavours, but I can’t go past the beef, rosemary and red wine. Huge chunks of free range steak tumble out with each bite and you won’t even need a knife to cut it. They’re not the cheapest pies in town, but for good reason. The family pie pushes the $ 20 mark, but provides 4 good serves of pie. Friends and I once had a pub debate about whether or not family pies were a rip off, because you just got less pastry. The Pure Pie family pies have a huge flakey crust, so there’s no arguments about whether or not you have been stitched up here. Although their single serve pies would be pretty freaking amazing too if you weren’t keen on sharing. Their take home packs are perfect to have ready to go in the fridge for one of Melbourne’s drearier Autumn or Winter days.

It’s not something I eat very often but I do love a good pie. Sure these may not be the cheapest pies around but these hand crafted parcels of goodness will leave you savouring every mouthful and glad you splurged. The little unassuming shop front on a quiet stretch of Bay Street has plenty of delights inside. The have a wide assortment of pies with fillings ranging from the more traditional such as beef with red wine sauce to weekly specials such as chicken bacon and leek. The pies are quite generous in size and we shared one. The beef was well cooked and melted in your mouth. The pastry crunchy outside and deliciously buttery. We also indulged in one of their home made chocolate and salted caramel tarts. This was supremely decadent with oozing caramel and chocolate ganache with every bite. If you have a few people to feed they also sell family sized pies to take home. The only reason this isn’t get 5 is that they’d run out of pork and fennel sausage rolls and I really wanted to try one. In one word delicious!

Oooooohhhhh goodie, they now stock dessert pies. My hairdresser tells me they are delicious and they must be because I go to try them and they are sold out and the lunch rush isn’t even over!

Pure Pie is a bit of a posh pie. The prices alone indicate these are not cardboard pastry footy pies laced with camel snout trim and withering sadness. It’s a farmers market pie packed with quality local ingredients. There’s nothing scary in them that you might have second thoughts feeding your family. I guess it’s the pie many people would hope to make themselves — if they had the time and restaurant quality produce. Originally they were handmade on site by Michael, but demand has grown from farmers markets, cafes and retailers so production has moved offsite to a production kitchen. One of these pies was a winner in the 2012 Delicious Magazine Awards — Braised Beef, Red Wine & Rosemary Pie. Judge Valli Little said, «The beauty of these handmade pies is in their freshness and simplicity,» For me it’s the lush buttery pastry and the sauce that is clearly made from scratch and not from a weird tasting caterers bucket of Mr Campbell’s celebrity masterchef TV stock. And then there are the quirky flavours like ‘Indian Butter Chicken’, ‘Free range beef, cheddar, Guinness and thyme’ or for the vegetarians, ‘Chilli chipotle beans, fresh spinach and feta’. Always good to have a point of difference. The pies themselves come in individual portions or family sized. There are sausage rolls and sometimes seasonal fruit pies too. If you want something on the side there are relishes and hot sauce on offer too. Look out for Michael’s sweet treats, my pick is the chocolate tarts with oozing salted caramel. Living nearby, I take away to heat at home, but there are a few seats for those who drop by there to eat. Or why not grab a takeaway and go sit under a peppercorn tree in the nearby Station Street park by the Port Melbourne light rail? Or stroll across Bay Street to a little park at the end of Raglan street that has a deck with picnic tables. And did I mention, you can buy them online too? Not the sausage rolls though. There still needs to be a reason for you to come to my hood.
