The food itself is 3 stars. This will be the first time ever in the history of my Unilocal account that I have bumped a place to 5 stars JUST based on the customer service. I left with a new-found love for the owner of this place and an undying wish to see his business do well. Seriously. My boyfriend wanted something a bit more breakfast-y that wasn’t too expensive, but alas we couldn’t find any nearby so we resorted to Danny Q’s charcoal chicken shop. The signs on the window is part of the menu and almost all of the meals were under 10 dollars — dirt cheap for a full meal with chicken, chips, AND a drink? I’m sold. Walk in, and you see a little Asian man running the shop by himself. My boyfriend asked him if he had any breakfast foods, and the man sheepishly apologised and said they didn’t have much besides sandwiches. My boyfriend then ordered a burger. To make up for the fact that my boyfriend couldn’t get exactly what he wanted, we saw the man PILE on chips on the plate. And I mean it was a mountain where you had to walk slowly so the chips don’t fall off — I’ve never seen such a generous portion in my life! My boyfriend opens his burger and notices that the man added bacon and egg, breakfast ingredients to make up for the fact that they have no real big breakfasts available. Fast forward to us happily eating our meals — a man walks in and starts looking at the newspapers on the counter. When he couldn’t reach one, the owner paused what he was doing, rushed from the kitchen, and gave the man the newspaper. Aww… Then I looked around and observed — a tiny charcoal chicken shop with very few seating and handmade posters of the menu. Just imagining this little man by himself carefully cutting out pictures and glue them to posterboard actually gave me a tear in my eye. — But to the food… Like I said, it was REALLY cheap for the portions you get. Half chicken with chips and a drink all for under 10 dollars. This place really serves you a bang for your buck. The chicken was delicious and juicy with very flavoursome roasted skin. Went great with a side of nice thick chips. Ketchup upon request.

The boys in my office celebrate what they like to call«Chicken Friday» at lunch times each Friday. So we all head to Charcoal Chicken where they get chicken and chips. I’m a vegetarian, so I only get the chips — and I usually grab some sushi from Yuri’s down the road. The chips are nice and fresh and crunchy. And the boys seem to enjoy their chicken.

Good chicken and chips. Maybe a little heavy on the sage, but the flesh slips right off the bone and the skin’s not at all dry. Chips are good, but in entirely unremarkable ways. Best of all, it’s cheep!
