Great venue for a Sunday lunch. Sat by the fireplace on a rainy cold Melbourne winter’s day couldn’t think of a nicer place to be with my better half. Lovely bottle of Riesling with our lunch of swordfish ceviche and the salmon fish of the day. Both were delish as is the Malbec to accompany the dessert. Apple and rhubarb crumble with coconut ice cream was great but the chocolate fondant wasn’t whatc we expected and wasn’t as good as others we’ve had. Go for the crumble, not the fondant!

Lunch today in the fine dining section. Grilled snapper on squid ink noodles. Lovely. The steak had by others was highly recommended, but the quinoa accompaniment didn’t do it for me! Wines are dear, but it’s fine dining I guess. Great service!

Split between a gastro-pub on one side, and total superstar restaurant on the other, Lamaro’s is worth a checking-out. The fine dining experience was another level altogether, with amazing food an outrageous wine list. The safe bets of shared appetisers and steaks are of extreme delight. Beware, extreme-sized bills can be incurred!

Only had a drink in the bar. A little off the beaten path in South Melbourne, but an attractive space and a nice bar with several lovely beers on draught.

The crowd at Lamaros is local, a bit older and conservative and the pub meets the needs of it’s clientele well which a decent drinks lists and food. And Trumer pils on tap at the bar. Last night I was there with a group and had a good veal Snitz with a coleslaw on top. It was simple and pleasing. Lamaros isn’t the kind of place I would go out of my way to visit but if I’m meeting somebody who lives nearby it is perfect.

Now standing for quite some time– back to 2006 I think, Lamaro’s is one of those rejuvenated gastro pubs that before was an imposing and foreboding pub/hotel of a by gone era. They have two sections: a fine dining room, for the more upmarket restaurant experience, and a wrap around island bar, that caters with generallyspeaking better tap beer than most, as well as a nicely stocked bar, withwine being strong focal point. The general bar area is good for drinks, and good quality bar snacks, and little bites to eat. The standard offood overall is quite good. Not so the greatest pub for socialising, though this does tend to be a distinct characteristic of Albert park. In fact if one wants be be snubbed and ignored this is the place for you. Wait, the Albert Park Hotel achieves this with far more astonishing results. They also have a function room out the back that seats around 18 I think, and is nigh on impossible to find unoccupied or unused. I suspect they may too, have other secret area’s. If one so wishes to smoke, it is done out on the street with little tables surrounded by trees laced with fine mildly twinkling fairy lights. Probably the place you want to go if you don’t want to be pestered by unwanted attention. Though not for quiet drinks as it does get very LOUD. This sadly doesn’t work well for females very well, as usually it’s hard to go anywhere without constant and unending approaches from all too annoying men. Go away!

Having all(independently) heard how great this place was, some girlfriends and I decided to have our next dinner catch up here. We were all very impressed with the food. Each bite was delicious, and I found myself admiring the dishes on neighbouring tables too — the schnitzel with coleslaw or rice eye with fat chips(on a neighbouring table) would have been my picks had I been feeling hungrier. As it was I had tuna tartare which was fresh and delicate yet flavourful. Just gorgeous. The seafood spaghetti(on my table) looked great although I didn’t taste it. Maybe next time. The rocket pear salad had a very sweet dressing and was a big hit on our table, we each kept diving into the bowl for more despite thinking we couldn’t eat another thing. I’m definitely keen to try this place out again.

Make no mistake, this pub has a distinct clientele — namely white, middle class aged 35−40+, and they will look at you funny if any part of you lies outside those tightly delineated outlines. Unless of course you’re like me, and you come here from time to time with your parents. In that case, you’re in for a pretty good treat because the food is consistently and succulently delicious. When I dig into a fine old steak, I can feel each individual taste bud perk up in a sort of unexpected frenzy of delight. As far as atmosphere goes, this place is reserved for the quieter kind. There is a bar section that gets just a little rowdy, but they are all office types. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an unsuited person adorn these fine parameters. If you’re looking for a classy gastro pub, by which of course I mean a top restaurant within the shell of an old pub, then Lamaro’s is reliably pleasing. Make sure to button up those shirts, though, men!
