Been one that’s been on my to do list for quite a while and my first surprise was the fact that I turn up at 9.40 and then they don’t open till 10?!? My goodness, I have never known a place is so popular that hasn’t been open early for the brunch demolishing masses. I know I should have checked the opening times, but boy was I surprised. The stables are beautifully done and in quite a lovely setting. We were outside in winter and went between freezing cold and stinking hot with the café blinds and the indecisive Melbourne weather. I hadn’t noticed a heater when we walked through the space. The food was fine, better than average. The portions weren’t large though and spent some time grilling the staff on the portion sizes because I fear the hangry. Where the stables faltered for me was the service. With so many wonderful places around, I think they need to take a very hard look at their service staff and consider putting an additional team member or two on. This would have prevented the couple of times my friend and I plus other tables were overlooked and prevent people from heading to other venues for brunch. I agree with the other reviews — be there at opening or prepare to wait for ages for a table.

The Stables has been going a while now, and has been a favourite spot for breakfast or lunch, and a reliable 4 star one at that. Sadly that appears to have changed with the recent change of ownership, based on today’s experience. The good is that the quality of the food appeared largely unchanged, despite some tweaks to the menu. The bad is the length of time between order and service. We were there at 11am for brunch and the place was only around half full. Certainly not«heaving». For brunch, 45 minutes is way too long. And to be told by the wait staff, upon polite enquiry at the 30 minute mark, that«there is a standard 35 minute serving time» followed by «yours will be another 10 minutes or so» without apology, simply highlighted the point. There’s something wrong if you can’t put poached eggs on the table inside 15 minutes.

This place is wonderful! The food is presented wonderfully and tastes just as good. The location is gorgeous with little white tables outside and looks like something out of vogue living. Go with good friends or a lover for breakfast! Defiantly a must try for those who haven’t been! Its also a nice place so you don’t have to go super casual which is nice sometimes because you can really enjoy the time you have there.

Lovelly food and great fit-out in a unique location. I’d love to recommend except for two things: 1. Service had a decidedly ‘disinterested’, almost pretentious air about it. Plenty of staff around but most seemed to preoccupied with things like restocking cupcakes, talking to their friends and quaffing their hair. Took many attempts to get some attention. 2. I ordered what turned out to be the worlds smallest quiche… for $ 17. Usually when I order a quiche, I expect lunch. This was more like a side and that’s being generous. Had to order something else just to avoid going hungry. Has potential to be great, especially with such a special location but I won’t be going back in a hurry.
