It’s hard to review a gallery seeing as the contents are constantly changing but in terms of a space this is really impressive. High ceilings, bare floorboards, beautiful sculptures in the atrium(thank you Ben and your year 10 Latin for that one). It’s only about a medium sized gallery, but you could still easily miss some of the little off-shoot rooms — which would be a tragedy because that’s where I’ve found the most engaging work. Jason Phu’s drawing exhibition was whimsical and beautiful and hilarious and melancholy. Joe Furlonger’s show took up the majority of the floor in my visit, and it really wasn’t my scene, but hey, collectors certainly disagree with me there. But like i said, those shows aren’t even there now, so you’ll have a totally different experience. But just the fact that they’re willing to have such a variety of work up at once I think says great things for Hughes.
