3 Wise Monkeys Pub

When I studied abroad in Sydney, I loved 3 Wise Monkeys! The music was fun, owner was great (and so friendly!), and part of the bar downstairs is icy which is so cool! The location is also convenient to the University of Sydney and we had a lot of fun nights here!

Good place to go during the week for happy hour or just drinks with friends. But on the weekends it can get overrun by backpackers and the under 20 crowd. The food is nothing to write home about but the beer selection is good and the bar is well staffed so you never wait too long for a drink.

Do not go here !!! The staff at the door is a joke … Save your time and money there are so many other better places to go. Avoid at all cost !

Five stars for what Ive felt so far about this place.
I went in in a Tuesday afternoon because I was so attracted by the three monkey statutes. It was quite empty because I came at 3pm and somehow felt like having the atmosphere of an café instead. Grabbed a cold beer, i sat by the windows to read my book and also be able to watch the inner Sydney’s busy street. It all just felt right.
Well, so muh for a bar scene! Haha
I’ll try going here in the evening next time to know how it really is.

Use to love this place seeing as for 5 bucks I get a place to chill and dance, however after a bad run in with one of the new staff for apparently «spitting at his direction» while having a smoke in a tiny smoking area just around the corner of the entrance. Last note, the main big security guard at the main entrance is my favourite aha

$ 5 to get into the venue on a Friday night, err for a Pub???
Then apparently the drinks prices go up after 9PM — without any mention or signs about this at the bar, or on their website or FB page, and despite me holding a menu in my hand listing the original prices (same as drinks menu showing on their website).
This wise monkey is taking myself (and the 4 others with me) elsewhere!

Fun place! The better half and I checked this place out on the day we moved to Sydney. We were trying to stay awake and thought a couple pints and a lively atmosphere might help, and we just happened to wander into this one. Sure enough, we had a lot of fun that first day, and have been back a few times since. The staff is friendly, they place hockey! And baseball on the countless tellys, and there’s lots of space to tuck into a quiet corner or sit by the windows and people watch. Oh, and the food is also decent, although I wouldn’t call it a gastropub at all… anyway, stop in to this place when you’re in the hood… almost guarantee you’ll have a good time.

For UFC and MMA fans in general the 3 Wise Monkeys has the fights for you.
The staff is friendly and efficient the perfect complement to the «divey» atmosphere.

Good place to grab a drink and watch a game. windows open up to George street so good views of street activity while you finish your drink.

This is a good pub to visit in Sydney as you’re strolling along George. They have a good selection of beers and drinks, small ones and large ones… depending on how thirsty you are. The kicker for me was that they were playing the NCAA tournament so that was a plus. Definitely a good place to come with your buddies.

Cool pub, stayed in the area for 5 nights and the 3 wise monkeys got kinda my local :) very relaxed and friendly, central and every night with a live band. The bands are good, mainly rock orientated.
If you wanna party, you can head upstairs, if you are just up for a chat, stay downstairs. They even have a casino style corner where you can gamble if you are up for that!
Good thing they have no cover charge before 10 and are open late, around 4am!

The bar may be open until 4 a.m. on weeknights, but if you’re hungry, better get here before the kitchen closes. We made it just in time, having just learned on our very first night in Sydney that restaurants don’t stay open as late as we’re used to. I guess we looked bedraggled, dazed, and confused enough after 15 hours on a plane, and told the bouncer at the door that it may be Tuesday, but it was still Sunday for us and we needed to eat, that he took pity on us and let us cut the line, making it in time before the pots and pans were stowed for the night. Oh, maybe it’s because, let’s face it, we’re O-​L-​D, and he wouldn’t want his mother to stand in line for an hour.
Having been to pubs in London, we figured out pretty quickly that you go order and pay at the bar, shlep your own drinks to the table, then wait till a runner brings your food. Table? We were lucky to squeeze into two seats at a pub sorta table near the bar, wedging between two guys obviously just from work and a bunch of overly loud girls on the prowl. The noise was deafening, the room warm despite the chilly temps outside, but the schnitzels we ordered were delicious. This despite the sticker shock, which turned out to be quite reasonable after we discovered that schnitzel is the de facto national pub food of Australia (they must have confused themselves with Austria), and we never saw it at such a low price again.
We also discovered that cider is very big in Oz, and since I’m not a beer drinker, I was a happy camper. Hubby had a pint of something.
Very good meal, uncomfortable place, but we were full and content.

I’ve been to Sydney several times and I always try to stop by this bar. I am not really sure, maybe its because of its mascots or I just keep hoping that things will change, I think the problem lies in that from the street this bar seems a bit more classy than what it is: your average backpacker bar. Really it boasts way too many power drinkers for its own good. Sure bars are meant to be loud and fun, but whenever, I’m there I feel like I slumming in a college bar on $ 1 beer night. The fact that my Sydney friends stay clear of this spot tells me that a true bar lovers time would be better spent elsewhere… really a shame though, because I think it has a lot of potential.

Selbst als Vegetarier bekam ich dort ein sehr gutes Essen. Das Personal ist sehr zuvorkommend und freundlich. Das Publikum sehr gemischt. Angenehme Atmosphäre zu günstigen Preisen, soweit es das in Sydney überhaupt gibt :-)

This pub was awesome! We started our night tour in this Pub and from time on we went in, it takes a long time to find the way out ;). Because we started downstairs for one or 2 beers and then the pubs gots noisy… Upstairs played a Band very good mix between rock and pop. I liked that! After a couple of hours upstairs we left this location to find a other one.
In the beginning of this night the prices for drinks are OK but the later it got, the more expensive the drinks.

This place is a fun place to go out. .. it’s fairly laid back and theres lots of levels and space depending on what you want. . the music on the top floor was good for dancing and the place was pretty full but there wasn’t a long line at any of the bars. .. the lower floors are a little more pub style for just sitting and talking. The location is fairly central and it’s near a lot of other places. .. great beer selection.

Really well priced, enjoyable food (with good serving sizes) and friendly, speedy service to boot make this a great little find in the heart of Sydney!

Ich gebe dem Three Wise Monkeys Sterne! Da sie unter der Woche fast immr mit Live Musik dienen und die Affen immer passend zu jeder Jahreszeit dekoriert sind. Natürlich sind viel Backpacker da, ist ja logisch in so einer coolen und relativ günstigen Bar in einer Weltmetropole namens Sydney!
Leider sind die Preise in den unterschiedlichen Etagen auch teilweise unterschiedlich, das finde ich nach wie vor etwas verwirrend und deshalbt einen Punkt abzug!
Mein Tipp am Wochenende ists einfach zu voll!

Les consommations et la nourriture né sont pas hors de prix, et à l’étage une piste de danse permet de passer un bon moment en musique (tubes du moment).
Vraiment très sympa, et très bien situé!

We came in here on a Saturday night to celebrate St. Patricks Day 2012. It was pretty crowded near the front door but not upstairs on the floors above. My husband drank a pint of Boag’s Draught for $ 8. We sat down, talked and watched a little tv.

Of course it was the monkeys themselves that caught my eye as I was wandering back to my hotel after dinner one night a little further down George Street. But it was the glance through the window that prompted me to make a point of popping by the next time I was down in Haymarket.
A few nights later, I found myself saddled up with a pint at one of the high tables behind the bar on the main level near one of the many TVs scattered about the establishment.
Was it worth the trek back to Haymarket? Sure. Is it worth the same trek again? Probably not. There’s nothing at all wrong with TWM, but there’s nothing all that spectacular about it, either. It’s a pub in an historic building, which is kind of par for the course in Sydney. They feature sports on their TVs (again, pretty standard stuff), food and drink (why else would you be in business as a pub?), and live music on the evenings (nothing really noteworthy about that either).
In general, the place was clean, the bartender was amiable and efficient, and it generally had a good energy and vibe for a Tuesday evening. The live music was a little obnoxious at times, but only in as much as I wasn’t there for the music and it was distracting from my book.
Overall, it’s a solid three star kinda place — it’s not outstanding, but it’s certainly not miserable. If anything, it feels a little out of place amidst the density of retail shops and Asian restaurants. But by the same token it also feels like a bit of an oasis.

Backpacker, Backpacker und ein paar wenige Australier. Wer in Sydney ist muss dahin sagen zumindestens alle. So besonders ist es dort nicht aber man kann dort schon Spaß haben.
Was mich gestört hat ist, dass ich dort eigentlich nur Deutsche getroffen habe nach dem Motto: Hey, ich bin auch deutscher.
Wenn man noch nicht lange in Australien ist und zufällig in der Nähe, dann ist es ein Besuch Wert. Man lernt unheimlich schnell und unkompliziert Leute kennen aber halt auch sehr viele deutsche (wenn man da unten länger unterwegs ist dann nervt das auf Dauer).

This place is what it is. A backpackers joint. But this review is based purely on mine and a friend’s experience on Friday night. Having been to a couple places prior, we weren’t sober but we weren’t exactly on a different planet! So we were let in with no problems and allowed to pay the $ 10 entry (for one thing, that’s ridiculous!) and as we walked in, we could see them watching us the whole way, then we walked up to the 2^nd level bar, still being watched and followed and then just as we reached the bar, the bouncer decided that we’d had our money’s worth and told us to leave.
For one thing, charging $ 10 to get into a pub, and a bad pub at that, is totally unacceptable. Secondly, if you think someone is too drunk to come into a venue, then the law states you don’t let them in — I’m pretty sure it doesn’t state, let them pay the entrance fee, follow them to the bar and kick them out. This certainly doesn’t do anything for the reputation of bouncers, which isn’t exactly brilliant anyway!
So bit of advice, there are plenty of bars in Sydney, so if you’re thinking of going here, just look in any other direction and you’ll find somewhere better!

Les 3 singes au-​dessus de l’entrée vous intrigue mais une fois à l’intérieur (5 $ l’entrée), c’est pas top! La musique est pas trop mal, les conso pas chères, mais pour ce qui est de la clientèle, malheureusement beaucoup de bourrés ou de gens louches si bien, que sortie dehors pour prendre l’air avec des amis, on n’a pu y entrer à nouveau à cause d’une bagarre qui s’est déclenchée à l’intérieur heureusement qu’on avait pris nos affaires avec nous! Je déconseille!

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. This is quite a fitting motto for a pub in the manner of, «What happens in Vegas…» Three Wise Monkeys is by no means as exciting or glamorous as the esteemed Strip but I do like their tri-​simian motif.
I generally avoid George St like the Plague, especially on weekend nights, but if a film, gig or transit forces me into the city I’ll sometimes pop in here for a pizza and a drink. The large high wooden tables are comfortable and non-​imposing and it’s the sort of bar you can go to on your own and not be bothered by derro men.
A margarita pizza is $ 8 and you can pay extra to add toppings or just stick with the base. I of course add chilli flakes and for pub pizza it’s really good– served on a wooden pizza board and dripping with cheese, I can eat a whole one on my own and not need to eat for a long time after! The crowd here tends to be suits during the week or just «normal» people meeting up before going out, it’s a little more sophisticated than most of the places on dive-​y George St and they have a nice selection of tap beer.

Das Three Wise Monkeys ist einfach nur die genialste Absteige der Stadt. Im dritten Stock gibt es hier täglich live music und im Erdgeschoss sogar-​was für Sydney die Ausnahme ist– einen Raucherbereich. Man füllt sich hier richtig heimisch, u.a. auch weil der ganze Club mit Teppich ausgelegt ist. Zumindest ich habe mich hier sehr zu Hause gefühlt, da ich nur ein paar Häuser weiter gewohnt habe. Ein bisschen seltsam wirkt es im ersten Moment schon, dass in jeder Ecker ein Security Guy die Lage auschekt, aber irgendwann übersieht man auch das. Das Three Wise Monkeys ist mit sicherheit nicht der beste Club der Stadt, aber auf jeden Fall immer gut für einen lustigen Abend. Man muss es zumindest einmal gesehen haben!

Es ist einer der besten Pubs in Sydney. Er geht über 3 Stockwerke und im obersten spielen sie fast jeden Abend Live Musik. Ich war in meiner Zeit in Australien gleich mehrmals dort und hatte immer viel Spaß!
