Pick a number. Multiply it by your year of birth. Add two zeroes. Multiply by the number you first thought of. You MIGHT be close to the cost of most landscape gardening projects in our particularly hilly corner of Sydney. It’s not easy territory — for the landscapers to work on or for the clients to keep control of! Get Smart, however, completed the particularly challenging garden of friend’s of ours without too great a blow-out of the budget — and we’re talking major earthworks here. So Marty recently came to us to see what ideas he could come up with for our smaller but no less steep and no more accessible piece of earth. What I liked was that he didn’t seem to think the only option was to start again completely — rather that it was possible to work with and develop what was there. He was also realistic about the surrounds of the garden — no matter what we did we were never going to achieve the ‘neat-and-tidy’ look. Natives and low maintenance were ideal: the overhanging untouchable angophoras and jacaranda would never dropping debris. No soil is turned as yet, but the plan looks good … watch this space.
