Traveled all the way from the US to explore Sydney and was turned down entrance to this place about 4 minutes ago because of a bouncer whose power had clearly gone to his head. He said that we exhibited signs of intoxication, which would have been somewhat plausible had we had more than a couple of cocktails prior. It was comical! I would not recommend this place to any visitors. Thank goodness I was not too intoxicated to write this!

If you’re looking for a casual and fun night out, the Argyle is your place. The lively music creates such a lovely atmosphere that has everyone on the dance floor. The bartenders are quite efficient and attentive despite the larger crowds on Friday and Saturday nights.

Decent place for a night out. The cover was 20AUD, but a woman decided to give us a group discount of 10AUD. I saw two different rooms with two types of music: one with pop/electric and the other with hip hop. I believe there should’ve been more, but I’m not too sure. Music was pretty good, and it wasn’t super crowded. We got a pitcher of some drink. The drink was disgustingly sweet, and alcohol+excess sugar never sets well with me.

Awesome setup. This place is cool! Way cool! It becomes a jammed nightclub or a quiet place for conversation and a light dinner depending on the time of night and day of the week. Really comfortable when it’s quiet. Really fun when it’s crazy. This is a great spot to check out and the food is decent as well.

After walking the Harbour Bridge we were starving and looking for a place to eat in the area. We were a large group of 11 and when we entered the area of the restaurant, there was an outdoor bar with tables and a well decorated inside area with a bar. We chose to sit outside as it was a beautiful sunny day. Their menu is extensive and has something for everyone! Water is self-serve outside. We ordered fish and chips, steak, and 2 pizzas. Everything tasted delicious. Would recommend to fellow travelers in Sydney.

Fantastic bar in the Rocks. I can’t comment on the food, nor the crowd as we came here late on a Tuesday night. But the place has a great vibe, extensive indoor/outdoor seating options, and well made cocktails.

What a great spot to meet up with friends or go on a date, particularly the outdoor patio area. We each ordered an espresso martini and when one of the waiters accidentally dropped my almost finished drink, they still brought us a new one to make up for it.

The Argyle is an excellent bar for many different reasons. It’s a great location, and unique in character. The large beer garden and the original timber interiors are fantastic. But ultimately the venue needs an upgrade of sorts. Parts of it are worn, staff are not friendly any more, bathrooms are in need of a revamp and the layout needs to be re-questioned. In saying that, it still attracts plenty of tourists as well as some of the function and work crowds, but The Argyle could certainly return to its past glory with a little energy and enthusiasm from management.

I didn’t eat here or stay for very long so I am purely reviewing this place on it’s bar, which I have to say is excellent. It has a lovely feel inside, especially when you are there and it’s not too crowded! The bartender was excellent at recommending a cocktail for me as I am so indecisive and usually quite picky with flavours but this Lilikoi? he made was delicious. And he boasted he made an excellent espresso martini which my friend tried and she definitely agreed that it was excellent. I think it’s a nice place to come if you want an afternoon cocktail in the outdoor courtyard on a spring or summer day. I’ve walked past on a Friday and Saturday night when coming home from work and it looks a little bit too clubby for my liking.

I’ve been here a few times… It’s seriously one of my favorite bars in Sydney, and I’m not a bar person, to be honest. It doesn’t get as crazy busy or too noisy that it’s impossible to talk, and the other patrons don’t get as drunk/sleazy as other bars. The last time I went here was last Saturday to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I hadn’t been in a while(over a year), and they’ve had some big changes. Namely, they got rid of their existing kitchen, which served standard bar food to a dumpling bar(!!) I don’t know how I feel about this. I love dumplings, but as bar food??? Though they did have things like fried calamari and chicken wings. But the menu had stuff like cheeseburger gyoza(good), pepper and wagyu gyoza(too salty), and some dessert gyozas(good.) The food is a little pricy for what you get, though they are pretty tasty. I like staying inside on the first floor with all the couches — good for catching up with friends! The dance floor is upstairs, and the DJs are usually pretty good too.

I didn’t eat at The Argyle, so this review is purely based on the bar aspect. This place is actually one of the best bars I’ve been to in terms of venue, music, and atmosphere. But when you start off having to pay a 20 dollar cover, I can’t give a place 5 stars. Other than. I really liked it. Huge courtyard, epic dance floor upstairs. Only wish they pumped up the air conditioning because it was so hot. I’ll definitely be going back.

The good: * no dodgy or overly messy patrons * one bartender seems to genuinely enjoy her job * friendly and well-dressed people in front * great layout * decent music on Friday The bad: * some bartenders seem to have level 3 case of sandy clams. You don’t snap at customers simply because they ordered from another bartender when you seem to have forgotten about them and started making drinks for others. And then grudgingly make said drinks while slamming everything down. Having had a service job, I can say that it’s unacceptable. This knocked off a star and a half. * stick with the ingredients listed or at least ask if customers would like the ingredient du jour. Last night’s: strawberries. The passion fruit seems to have been missed entirely(which I’d be fine with) and replaced with strawberries which makes my throat close. Had I not spotted it before taking a sip… well, hope you keep epi pens on site. This being said, s – t happens so this didn’t weigh heavily on the rating * For a place with such a chill layout, it’s a bit pretentious. Minus one star.

We were looking for somewhere for lunch on a Sunday, and this was walking distance from Sydney Observatory. On a blisteringly hot summer day the dark, cool interior was a welcome change. Problem was, that after checking the menu outside I wandered in, sat down, started ordering, and then realised that I was in the wrong restaurant… it turns out that Ananas and Argyle share the same archway entrance but are different restaurants. Ananas turn right, Argyle go straight ahead! Dumplings are pretty popular at the moment, and the Xiao Long Bao at The Argyle are reasonably good. The menu is fairly standard Chinese Hawker/Cantonese Style fare but dressed up to the nines — dumplings, San Choi Bao, Roast Peking Duck & Peking Duck Rolls(why do people call them pancakes?). This must be the place that cool young hipsters go to drink and have some food on the side. After all, the prices and seating are more suited to lounging back, getting drunk, and nibbling like tapas rather than sitting down for a proper meal. A real surprise was the«Cheeseburger» signature dish. I thought the kids might like something a bit more… kid-friendly. Turns out the«Cheeseburger» is a re-imagined dish… a cheeseburger deconstructed and re-assembled as a dumpling. It did not go down well with the kids, so I had no hesitation in scoffing the lot. The chicken wings were a bit bland unless you made full use of the spicy chilli sauce(a bit like buffalo sauce, but something was missing… no blue cheese). That also was not a hit with the kids so perhaps that is worth serving with a range of sauces in the future. And while you are there, make sure you check out the loo. Hopefully it will take you less time than me to work out what the strange lightpods at the back are for, and also where the taps are… let alone how to turn them on! But please, Argyle, you can do better than a pile of paper towels on a bench.

Went here for a late dinner –Ambiance: dim lighting inside with plenty of couches and chairs — lends itself to a romantic and cozy setting for couples. Also, outdoor space available for those who prefer a bit of breeze –Service: great, food came out promptly and staff was friendly –Food: inventive and tasty but few items ordered were heavy-handed on the salt. –Chilli Mud Crab steamed dumpling: minimal crab but over the dumpling was meaty and flavorful –Scallop Har Gow steamed dumpling: solid, however, couldn’t quite figure out why the dumpling skin was green in color – didn’t really impart any flavor and wasn’t particularly an appetizing hue –Cheeseburger gyoza: favorite dish of the night. interesting twist on your standard gyoza. nice thin skin! –Spicy Prawn gyoza: packed a bit of heat and overall fairly tasty –Tiger Prawn & Green Mango salad: I have had many a green mango salads and have to say this one really stood out. the addition of pomegranate, noodles and toasted coconut shavings were a nice touch. would have liked to have seen less dressing though –Long Soup: thin egg noodles, very little veggies and the soup was overly salty.

This place does a complete 180 transformation between day and night… think true Jekyll and Hyde here. During the day the courtyard is a calm, relaxed place to catch a boozy lunch with friends. The burgers are actually awesome here and with a bar outside you don’t even have to venture into the creepy darkness inside. There’s also a bathroom outside so you really have no need to venture within. There’s plenty of sun that gets into the courtyard so if you can’t find a space at the Glenmore it’s still a great spot. After about 6 pm, though, is a completely different story. If you’re not wearing sky high heels, a dress that barely covers all the necessities or have a permanent resting bitch face you will feel very out of place.

I am not impressed. I’ve walked past this bar several times when in the Rocks and finally decided to give it a go last night because my companions were tired of walking around the cobblestoned streets. We maybe should have walked a bit further. Aside from the fabulous setting in an old warehouse I can’t think of anything that we enjoyed. I couldn’t agree more with Ben’s review of the people who frequent the Argyle. I had forgot to dress the part of a model. The beer selection is pretty weak. Worst of all, they had no idea how to make a margarita. I’ll be spending my happy hours at another water hole, thank you much.

The ambient lighting and décor of the Argyle does not make up for it’s over priced beverages, cramped dance floors upstairs(excess couches crowd the layout), the lack of ventilation or cooling system(aside from a beautiful front courtyard which slightly makes up for this, but only slightly), and overall dissatisfaction that the service of the venue offers. There is so much left to be desired from your Friday and Saturday night here, that not even the most fun group of friends could make it better — though they sure help. The Argyle aims to exude class, but it’s culture of pretentiousness is disappointing. Of course I want to walk the red carpet into a historical and seasoned venue, but not at the sacrifice of my ankles(cue girl tripping over cobblestone and stilettos) or at the risk of wasting my time for a sub par night with a $ 20 cover charge after 10pm and a $ 18 cocktail to match. I won’t even begin to detail the disgusting display of judgement and bullying by management and security as they ‘do their job’ — shaming customers for their dress with up and down looks is never appropriate. Perhaps a quieter week night visit might be a better choice, but organise your weekend girls’ night elsewhere! Potential for success, but an absolute pitfall in what one really walks away with having gone to the Argyle.

For some reason I cant fathom, I’d never been to The Argyle before. Though when we waltzed through the big glass swinging doors, my companions let it’s reputation be known as common knowledge… I’m so out of the loop. It has a see through glass DJ Booth suspended from the 2nd level mezzanine. It has unisex toilets that look like something from The Man of Steel the movie. The ATM is in the toilets. It is one of the oldest still functioning buildings in the country(We’re talking colonies, baby) They say it gets ridiculously packed to the literal rafters on the weekends. A mixture of old world charm and space age amenities, I really liked the décor. You can sit and relax in antique armchairs and lounges surrounded by an ecclectic mix of chandeliers and other light fittings.. One guy who looked to be in his 50s was«cutting shapes» over on the other side of the room, and then looked to doze off. He was clearly warming up for Friday night. It seems to attract all sorts, especially English tourists. I guess the colonial feel makes them feel at home. Cocktails. Look for the weekly special which this time was a Bee sting. This cocktail that I have mentioned before at another bar, seems to be the flavour of the month. Served in Jam jars and only 10 rods! Excellent. My pals were chuffed at my recommendation of trying this concoction. The Argyle boasts 9 different function rooms that can be hired for events, including Ananas. Fine dining and cocktail bar. Did you know just about every other language calls a Pineapple Ananas? Ha. Worth a look if youre desperately seeking mixology. Most other places in the Rocks only do it on the weekends.

Cool venue where there is different areas to suit different tastes. You have the courtyard, inside area and also a small dancefloor area upstairs. Although beware that the service at the bar is a very slow every time I’ve gone here(management note: hire more staff when it’s busy!), but be thankful that you’re getting your drinks slower because the line to the bathrooms can also get crazy when this place is packed too: P I secretly do think theres a conspiracy there though where slow service means people spend more on drinks because they are sobering up waiting for service.

Let’s talk about people, people. The other reviewer’s here have done a cracking job waxing lyrical about the décor, the layout, the sandstone/castle vibe, and getting their wee-willie-winkies peeked at by curious girls who want to see what the clam shell urinals are all about. You will REALLY like the Argyle if you are: A) a man and enjoy wearing suits not only to work but also to bars. Maybe you had a recent break-in and all your T-shirts were stolen, who knows. B) a model. The long, leggy kind that wears clingy dresses and has lots of shiny shampoo-commercial hair that seems to catch the light even when there is none. C) a person who likes talking to, picking up, or perving on men in suits or lady models from dark corners. There are lots of dark corners at the Argyle. It makes perving super-easy, with very little chance of getting caught. Unless you want to get caught, which is probably some kind of fetish. D) all of the above. Which would basically make you some sort of sartorially significant hermaphrodite. Which would be totally awesome, yay you!
