Well, once again I was walking along the street(this time Fiztroy Street in St Kilda), taking in the views when I suddenly discovered some really well worn seats next to the sidewalk. As it turned out these seats belong to a rather bohemian looking bar. So that was when I decided that I would step inside and have a drink, simply because I wanted to check it out, and publicans tend to prefer you wandering around their bar with a drink in your hand that without(which is fair enough because they aren’t exactly an art gallery — or at least this one isn’t). Anyway, I quite liked this place, and even though the seats were quite well worn, it does suggest that it is quite a popular place to while away your time. They even have live music, but unfortunately I wasn’t around to spend some time listening to it.

This place is incredible! The panko-crusted salmon is a must, and any of the cocktails will leave you in awe. The atmosphere is what reels you in, and leaves you on a high well after you’ve started to make your way home. I visited for the first time in April 2014, and will be going back for sure!

If you want an authentic St Kilda experience. This is it. The staff are friendly, the food is awesome and the atmosphere is welcoming. I love that they stock Kronenbourg(my fav beer) and that after a few visited you are received like an old friend. It’s a MUST when coming through St. Kilda!

This is it people. The home to the best burger in Melbourne… without a doubt! Barney’s has been my local for four years(even when I’ve not lived so local). Its place is so cemented in my life, I even played on a soccer team named after the pub. Aside from the friendly and accommodating staff, Barney’s strength has to be in its burger. I’ve had Huxtaburger, Danny’s, Bottom End… None of it comes close. Its real strong point is its beetroot chutney, and with a side of fries and kick-arse sauce… perfecto. (though a warning, it is a huge serve…)

Much as Iain Hewitson is my most loathed TV chef of all time, I do like Barney Allens. An interesting, unpretentious menu is incredibly well priced. The burger is great value at $ 12.50 with optional side of fries. It comes with a delicious beetroot relish, thick char-grilled patty and bacon. A fantastic feed. The«melted toblerone fondue» served with marshmallows is not exactly a difficult dessert to reproduce at home, but certainly is a crowd favourite. Oh and Hewi’s «special» BBQ sauce? Is pretty much ketchup with sweet chilli. Fail.

Barney Allen’s is well served by its location towards the city end of Fitzroy St. You have dinner in St Kilda proper, or catch a gig at the Prince of Wales, end up doing a mini pub crawl up the street, and end up in Barney Allen’s. And it’s a good place to end up in, a bar made for lively conversation, with art on the walls and a busy vibe. I don’t know that I’d go out of my way to come here, but I’m not exactly sad when here’s it happens.

Barney Allen’s is one of those bars like Cheers. Everybody knows your name. ‘Barney’ is a happy cheery guy who you’ll love pulling up a stool and having a chat to. I lived in St Kilda for a long while and so every time I am there I am always bumping into old friend. A long cushioned bench seat out the front accommodates all the smokers and it feels friendly and communal. Always a comfy vibe and on the weekends it can turn into a rollicking good time. There’s a tv in the corner so sport fans can engage, however it doesn’t overtake the joint. The crumbed mushrooms with an aioli are to die for. Just make sure you give them a sec to cool down. They are burn-your-whole-mouth hot! I love this place.
