After our beloved local thai closed down we were left with the sad task of finding another. We have tried a couple now and so far Tawan Thai is the pick of the bunch. The food is your basic suburban Thai but well cooked, tasty and fast. We usually judge a thai place by its massaman and the massaman here is good. Well cooked and very tender with lots of flavour. The rest of the dishes we ordered were good too. The prices are very good. It was something like 20 bucks cheaper than the last place we tried for more food. Will this become our new local? Still too early to say. We are still interviewing candidates but they are certainly on the shortlist. Stay tuned…

Now that our favourite Thai has closed(Thai Jumpa) we had to find a new one. There is one closer to home at Asquith but I’d heard good things about this so we thought we’d give it a go. A Tuesday evening is not peak time so I can’t say what it would be like on, say, a wet Friday but our meal was cooked quickly, done well, and to our surprise considerably cheaper than the last time we got a full takeaway(to the tune of $ 20 or so less than we normally need to spend). The rice portions are big, so we actually ordered too much and had 2 full serves left over. As well as the standard Jasmine, they do a portion of rice that comes with peanut sauce on it for extra flavour. Very tasty but doesn’t work so well as a base for the dishes. The food was really well cooked and very tasty. Their vegetarian money bags are new to me but really good. We had a beef massaman, chilli duck, and a few other dishes that I can’t remember without looking at the menu. All were great. Added to the joy they threw in a bag of spicy prawn chips at no cost. These were not your usual deep-fried, dissolve-on-the-tongue prawn chips but instead were much crisper and crunchier. Nice and fresh. They have a few tables for dining in but it is really a takeaway place. They do deliver too if you need it. We’ll be going back.

A hole-in-the-wall sort of place, but wonderfully fresh and tasty Thai, better than most more expensive restaurants. Always good. There is some seating, inside and out, but it’s mostly a take-away place. Try the chili jam combo.
