St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral

I recently went along to a service here with my friend’s family who are orthodox and wow, what an experience. For starters, if you’ve never been inside a Russian church before, it’s nice just looking at all the icons painted on the walls. As for the service, it’s interesting, but make sure you have a coffee and a decent meal beforehand, as it’s a long service, running for 2 – 3 hours.
The service is pretty much all sung in Russian, but there are some parts where they read a homily or something to do with church administration and for these they provide an English translantion.
As with all churches, you should be dressed modestly, however, there’s a further dress code that women must observe. An ankle-​length skirt – no jeans or trousers – must be worn, as well as a scarf covering the hair. If you haven’t got either of these, they have extras at the door, but I advice wearing your own, as the skirts provided are pretty frumpy.
I have no religious reason to go to a church service, but going along to one at the Russian Orthodox Church is quite the cultural experience, worth doing once, but probably not twice.
