With all the big bookstores disappearing it was a worry that all the smaller independent bookstores would be struggling to keep their doors opened. But so far it seems that they are doing ok. I continue to try and support the smaller stores whenever I can. Bookcase is a little bookstore in the Dog Swamp Shopping Centre in Yokine. It has a pretty good selection of books, from fiction to non fiction, travel and a great kids section. The prices here are not really cheap, but not really expensive either. The only thing this place lacks are specialised staff. The staff here also work at the newsagency across the centre and don’t have a huge amount of knowledge for books. But if you are looking for something at the right price, this may be the place for you.

It’s nice to see bookshops like this alive and well while the Borders of this world have had to shut shop. Independent bookstores usually stock more interesting slices of fact and fiction. Bookcase certainly does. There are plenty of books on cooking, travel and language, quality biographies and autobiographies, and a section devoted to kids’ reading, even fitted out with a mini play area so that parents can rest assured there’s something for their tots to do while they’re busy perusing the many wonderful tomes, hardbacks and paperbacks on offer. Across the arcade is a newsagency and in between that and Bookcase is a pop-up table topped with books and toys at discount prices. All good quality and excellent buys for whenever I’m visiting friends with kids and want to give them something more educational than Dora the bloody Explorer!

This is the coolest little bookshop I’ve ever been to. Sure, Leederville has Oxford Street Books. The city has Borders. Mt Lawley has Planet Video. But I want this bookshop to be put on the map. The books are so cheap. Like, honestly, I’ve never got so many books for so little a price. It’s amazing. I got a cute little book called«How to Hepburn» about the life and character of Katherine Hepburn. It’s amazing, well-writtten and I read it in its entirety in about 15 minutes. And, the best part was the fact that it cost me $ 6! SIXDOLLARS. I mean, come on people. Do I need to spell it out for you? GETTOBOOKCASE! I may just go down there today and pick up a big pile of books.
