Bar Astor

The staff shows preference for the local Brazilians, and gives the tourist little attention. I was waiting in line to get in, along with other tourists, and some local Brazilians showed up and were allowed to skip the line. The food is ok.

Yes and yes. Visited on my trip to Brazil from the states and bookmarked this place. Wasn’t disappointed at all! Steaks are delicious as well as their mashed potatoes (puré). And if you get lucky, you’ll get serenaded by the street musicians while sitting outside. Beautiful Brazilian breeze is the ice on the cake!

Great atmosphere. Good selection of menu items & decent prices. We ordered 2 drinks & a Picadinho dish to share. The food was very tasty. The rice unfortunately had a couple small ceramic pieces buried in it, probably from a shattered plate, and we did not discover that until towards the end of the meal. Out of concern for other customers we showed the waiter. He altered the manager immediately who then insisted on comping our food, even though we kept signaling it’s ok we did not mind paying. We do not speak the language so we probably didn’t explain very well that we were not bothered by it at all. Overall we liked the place very much and will not hesitate to go back. We got there just after dark, but if you plan to have dinner here, try to get a patio early enough to watch the sunset!

Absolutely love this great outdoor patio where you get a perfect view of the beach. The patio can also be covered so sitting outside in the rain is an enjoyable experience. The patio is very large, so you have quite a bit of space which is a little uncommon compared to other bars in the area. Good price and good drinks. Drinks are quite strong. And a lot of the people there speak English, which can be a plus for tourists

Though still a Carioca, I sadly only come to visit the cidade maravilhosa on vacation, roughly once a year, usually with some sort of short bucket list of must dos on my stay. Undoubtedly Astor makes the list every time, since its old world charm nestled in the middle of Ipanema and overlooking the beach is enough to make it a destination. However, Astor goes above and beyond the expectations for this location, making this place the venue of some of my most enjoyable evenings in town. While its predecessor, Barril 1800, offered cold beer and cheap bolinhos, Astor serves arguably the best drinks in town and yes, bolinhos, but also France-​meets-​bossa concoctions such as the moules, the bacalhau a brandade, and my new favorite, the cocotte. The latter is best described as a heavenly Gruyère based «fondue» nestling not one but two perfectly cooked poached eggs. It’s what dreams are made of. Service is on point and as my friend Abhi k. points out, the mixologists are proud and true to their art. I hope this new classic is here to stay, my visits home would be a little less glam without it.

Good vibes, strong drinks and cool décor. Takes you back. You kinda have to know the language to understand the food menu, but thank goodness the drink menu is crystal clear so you can let the booze bring our your finest Portuguese;)

Great drinks, even though the bartender didn’t have all the ingredients necessary for a sazerac; he went to great lengths to accommodate! What more could you ask for?!
Not sure about the food; but if the drinks are any indication it should be pretty good.

This was our first meal in Brazil after our 18 hour flight from California. We arrived just before the rush. The patio was full, but they seated us inside with a nice view — they are located across from the beach (every view was nice). We ordered drinks, I had a refreshing watermelon martini, my hubby had a Jameson & Ginger, Stella and our friend had a Long Island Iced tea. To eat we had the mussels & frites along with the steak & frites. Both good portions, the steak was perfectly cooked with juicy favors. The mussels could have been cleaned but I’ll look past that… They were cooked in butter & white wine.
Overall the experience was enjoyable and the drinks were delicious. We definitely plan to stop back again before we leave.
We tried to stop back in but they have different hours of operation.

I really liked it. The prices are a shade too high but other than that it’s a great place near the Ipanema beach front. Nice ambiance. Great place to go to if you want diverse dining options. They had omelets, fish and chips, spaghetti and meatballs, burgers, sandwiches, etc.

My partner and I had a great time here! They had a variety of food that felt like I was still eating in Brazil but was satisfying some of the cravings I had for American food after being in Rio already for a few weeks. I had the steak, cheese, and tomato sandwich and my partner had one of their burgers. We were both very happy with the food!
As for drinks, we each ordered 3 capirinhas each. They were definitely strong, and compared to buying drinks in the US were still affordable (21 reis each for ones with fruit compared to paying $ 10 in America for a cocktail is a pretty good deal). Our server was very accomodating and could tell we were wanting to try different caipirinhas, so he brought us some different fruits to try that were unique to Brazil and made drinks from them.
We were a little short on reis, so we paid with a credit card. They were very sure to make sure we knew exactly how much the bill was and that we knew we weren’t going to be overcharged, which is a pretty big problem in Rio. The service charge was 10% which is one of the lower ones I’ve found at nice places.

Lugar badaladinho e com drinks deliciosos… Tem uma música animada e no volume certo para não atrapalhar nenhuma conversa. Esse é um lugar que eu recomendo tanto para jantares, por apresentarem um menu variado e muito gostoso (desde carpaccio até super burger com temperos incríveis); quanto para breves encontros com amigos (sugiro a porção de croquete de carne que é uma delícia).
O preço é justo, pois os produtos são de alto qualidade!

Great location on Ipanema. This is an old school classic-​inspired bar that transports you to a time when it was exciting to go out for a drink. Where you can take a date or a group of friends before or after dinner or the beach to just have fun and get an expertly crafted drink. I was watching the bartender while we were waiting for our seats, and it was just marvelous observing the care he put into each drink. If the drink had a purée base, he didn’t want there to be any chunks floating around, so he would run a spoon through it and drag out anything less than perfect. And although this was most likely part of his routine, he never let the rote nature of the task show. He would squat down to look at the drink at eye level just to make extra sure it was perfect.
I had the wallpaper, which was a fantastic passion fruit purée, cachaca drink with a perfect kick. I also had two capisakes, one with pineapple, and one with grapes. If I make it back to rio, this is where I’m stopping in. It doesn’t matter if I don’t get back there for another five years, because when a place is as timeless as Bar Astor, five years is a drop in the bucket.

Ninguna duda tuve al momento de poner 5 estrellas.
Está ubicado frente al mar en la playa de Ipanema y evidentemente es EL BAR de Río de Janeiro.
Nos sentamos en las mesas de la vereda y arrancamos con 2 tragos con base de gin: uno bien aromático con Gordon´s (en la carta figuraba Bulldog pero no tenían) y otro delicioso con Mare.
Para comer, yo pedí la old fashioned burger (con queso y hongos) acompañada de papas y ensalada que estaba buenísima y Andrea una tartine de salmón super abundante e igual de genial que mi hamburguesa.
Todo esto con 2 cervezas tiradas salió aproximadamente 170 reales que valieron cada centavo.
En la carta también tienen una muy buena variedad de tragos clásicos y otros mas innovadores, sánguches y algunos platos mas elaborados.
En resumen: amé Astor.

Good option on the beach — we had lunch here and the food was very nice. The service was good by brazil standards and the drinks were great. I did find it strange that they option at 1pm tho — thought that if they were serving lunch perhaps they should open earlier!

Location and atmosphere make this place a must visit while in Rio. Very nice people, perfectly poured beer and good food, walking distance from Ipanema beach.
Try to go early as it fills up very quickly.

This is definitely a go-​to spot if you are ever looking for a nice upscale place in Rio to enjoy the sights, sounds, and delicious food! Everything in Brazil takes so much better because it is all so fresh. The best part is this is just a walk away from the wonderful beach area of Ipanema.

Disparado o melhor bar do RJ. Sem saudosismo como o Jobi, sem glamour publicitário como o Chico e alaide, o Astor tem o melhor chope, melhor atendimento e melhores drinks da cidade!!! Atendimento com a qualidade paulista e vista carioca!!!

This past weekend was my first weekend in Rio. My family here in Sao Paulo made me promise not to go to Astor, which is one of my favorite spots in SP, but I couldn’t resist.
My husband and I came by to grab lunch after a long morning of standing in the rain at the Cristo. The tables were full on the outside patio, but we opted for sitting inside. I was in the mood for air conditioning.
We ordered up some drinks that came out quickly. I was feeling kind of crappy so I decided to skip the alcohol and order their virgin mojito. It was amazing!!! I easily could drink those for forever. However, if you want to get boozy, definitely grab a choppe, caipirinha, or my favorite, Caju Amigo.
We decided to try different appetizers than we usually get. We asked for an order of bolinhos de arroz and empanadas. I had palmito, he had shrimp. All were excellent! Their empanada dough is on point.
Moving on to eat, I asked if they could make me just a plain spaghetti. No problem! They made me a special dish with just a little bit of tomato and basil.
Staff was friendly and efficient, and the location of this Astor is perfect — across the street from the beach! They have valet, so don’t worry about looking for parking.
Also, this Astor is about 3 times the size of the one in SP, so you can expect to get seated faster!

A nice bar with outdoor seating near Ipanema beachfront. A great place to sit for hours, and have a Caju Amigo, some pastels, and fried cod balls. It is also located near one of the best hotels to stay in Rio, Hotel Fasano.

The best cocktails can be found here. Plus, you’re spitting distance from the Ipanema sands. I’ve come here a number of times for an after dinner drink, but you can find this place filled with locals and tourists beginning at 6pm when they open.
The drink menu is robust and filled with American classics (sidecar, old fashioned, manhattan) and Brazilian mainstays (caipirinhas available in every fresh fruit combination you could imagine). What’s amazing about the caipirinhas is the lengthy process taken to make each one. First, there’s the muddling of the fruit, then the added cachacha, strong shaking takes place and then in a separate tin, the bartender will make his own crushed ice to top it off with. So, if you’re after a good cocktail, you’re in good hands here.
While I’ve never ordered the food, they do have a solid menu that’s sure to offer great drinking snacks for you and your party. There’s a cool old fashioned vibe here and the location is awesome.

Excelente localização, carta de drinks variada com diversas opções de caipirinhas, petiscos diferentes e deliciosos, como o bolinho de arroz.
Ambiente agradável e confortável, tanto para um casal quanto para grandes grupos. É possível ficar nas mesas, nos sofás/​poltronas, no bar ou nas mesas altas com um grupo de pessoas em pé.

Na minha opinião o Astor é o melhor bar do Rio.
Todos dizem que o chopp é incrível e, para os que não bebem chopp/​cerveja como eu, podem aproveitar muito os drinks! São maravilhosos e sempre tem novidade no cardápio.
Os petiscos e os pratos também são muito gostosos e chegam à mesa muito bem apresentados.
O lugar é espaçoso e tem opção de ficar na varanda de frente para a praia de Ipanema. A vista do pôr do sol dali é demais!
O único eventual inconveniente é a fila de espera que as vezes se alonga mais do que gostaríamos, mas para isso não tem jeito. A espera pode ser do lado de fora ou mesmo nos banquinhos que ficam ao longo do bar. Nos dois lugares já pode pedir bebidinhas.

This place is awesome. Great location! Its right across from Ipanema beach. Has both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu does have variety and the food is good. Be warned, there is always a wait for dinner, especially my time there during the world cup. Mind boggling about the quantity of beautiful and friendly women that come here for dinner but then again that’s Rio for you ;)

Sempre uma excelente escolha. O ambiente é muito legal as caipirinhas são feitas com muito cuidado com cachaça de boa qualidade ou vodkas e com boa variedade de frutas. Como já estive ai varias vezes, já provei muitos petiscos. Entre os que realmente são de primeira linha recomendo a empada de camarão, os pasteis de camarão e os croquetes de carne. Todos deliciosos. Quanto ao prato principal, destaco o bacalhau que realmente é o meu preferido. Acho que a casa devia treinar mais o pessoal da entrada. Não basta falar vários idiomas é necessário estar aclimatada ao estilo de Ipanema e Rio de Janeiro.

First of all, great atmosphere and location. Service was par, but that’s expected. Ordered the BURGER and it’s one of the best MEALS I’ve had at that price $ 33 reals which is $ 17 dollars. Not as good as say, corner bistro or shake shack in NYC, but I threw out those comparisons after many attempts eating in brazil. Food taste well, and service can be better.

Seria presunção falar que um dos melhores bares cariocas é paulista?
Poxa amiguinhos do Rio, não me odeiem, mas é verdade! Na minha última visita à cidade maravilhosa fui ao Astor mais de uma vez (ok, mais de duas vezes), mas era por uma boa razão.
— Os barmans aqui são simpáticos! É difícil achar atendentes simpáticos no Rio.
— Está de frente pra praia! É difícil achar lugares de frente pra praia no Rio.
— Além de chope eles tem drinks. É difícil achar bons drinks (além de caipirinha no Rio).
Ah estava tudo a favor do Astor e a gente não conseguiu resistir.
Se te consola, não sou habitué do Astor paulista, mas pensando nos bons momentos e gargalhadas dadas por aqui, devo reconsiderar isso.
Lugar agradável, um pouco cheio mas nada terrível! Ideal para o «início dos trabalhos», como diz uma galera por aí quando vai começar a beber.
Recomendo o martini, mas dá uma olhada no cardápio especial com drinks feitos com gin, são todos um must!

Gosto muito do Astor, sempre. Domingo fui novamente conferir o cardápio. Para começar nunca resisto à porção de pasteis, sempre de camarão, massa deliciosa, sequinho, perfeito. A caipirinha de limão é feita como deve ser, bem carioca :-). Como prato principal, minha amiga e eu dividimos um file Oswaldo Aranha e uma salada grega. O file bem suculento vem coroado de alho frito, arroz puxado no alho e batata portuguesa… perfeito. A salada deu o «toque saúde» ideal, bastante farta, com queijo cabra, azeitonas negras e outras delicias. Meu amigo pediu o bacalhau, o preferido de meu marido também. O chopp do Astor é sempre um capítulo a parte, mas nesse domingo andou distante das mesas, esperado ansiosamente e festejado quando avistado na bandeja dos garçons. Tudo bem, nada é perfeito, e vamos combinar que esperar nesta localização e neste astral nao é nenhum sacrifício. Nao vejo a hora de voltar!

O Astor é conhecido por ter o melhor chope do Rio de Janeiro; não bastasse isso, amigos entendedores da coisa me dizem que ele também figura entre os melhores no quesito drinks. Não me recordo de ter provado os drinks da casa, mas o chope é realmente delicioso, com um colarinho bem cremoso que é uma perdição.
Os pratos também são saborosos, como o filé à Oswaldo Aranha e o peixe Amalfitana — o último foi pedido por minha acompanhante e eu confesso que fiquei morrendo de inveja da escolha dela depois que provei um pedacinho. O bolinho de bacalhau fez as vezes de entrada e também foi super aprovado: é daqueles que desmancham na boca e deixam gostinho de quero mais.
Dependendo do horário pode ser difícil conseguir uma mesa aqui, já que o movimento não para, o que tem uma explicação que vai além da boa comida e serviço: a localização privilegiada. Afinal, todo mundo, turista ou não, quer sentar de frente para a praia de Ipanema durante a refeição. As mesas do lado de fora, aliás, são as minhas preferidas de longe. O lado de dentro, apesar da decoração bacana e espirituosa, é um pouco escuro e barulhento demais para o meu gosto.
Dou quatro estrelas porque acho que o preço não é lá dos mais camaradas e porque, apesar de gostar do Astor, ele não é um daqueles cantinhos genuinamente cariocas que me falam de verdade ao coração. Mesmo assim, indico aos amigos e voltaria sem pestanejar.

This is a great café/​bar right along the beach. Ask for a table in the patio so that you can see all the foot traffic go by as you suck down all sorts of tasty caipirinhas.
(try lychee, cashew (the fruit part, not the nut, — (I didn’t know either!)).
They also have a great variety of local foods. Eat all of it.

Sabe aquele final de semana em que você quer mudar de ambiente, achar um lugar sofisticado, diferente, porém com preços acessíveis? Esse lugar é o Astor.
Com uma vista maravilhosa da praia de Ipanema, o Astor é cheio de personalidade — da decoração ao cardápio. Este, por sinal, apresenta tantas opções variadas que fica difícil escolher. Entre os petiscos, as trouxinhas de rosbife com gorgonzola e os sanduíches são sempre ótimas pedidas. Já para beber, parece que a variedade aumenta: chopp gelado, gin, licores, whisky, além de caipirinhas (vodka, cachaça, saquê) saborosíssimas, assim como os drinks especiais preparados com capricho.
O atendimento é excelente, e pode ser que você enfrente uma fila para conseguir sua mesa — mas não se preocupe, sua noite no Astor já começa no bar!

Se você está por Ipanema e quer beber aquele chopp gelado, lá pode ser sua boa ideia!
Linda decoração e aconchegante é um ótimo lugar para petiscar ou mesmo matar a fome enquanto toma aquela cervejinha sempre gelada.
Conhecido por sua cara «boemia requintada», oferece uma variedade de pratos e petiscos. Canapés e tostados com vários sabores. Os pratos mais cobiçados são a feijoada tradicional e a rabanada com polenta!
Vale a pena conferir!

Decoração bacana, comidas deliciosas e um chopp gelado com muito colarinho. Assim é o boêmio bar na orla de ipanema. O Astor vive cheio e não costuma fazer reservas, mas a experiência vale os minutos desperdiçados na fila. Enquanto aguarda, você pode tomar uma caipirinha no balcão e assistir o movimento.
Os aperitivos filé com queijo e lula frita são ótimos para satisfazer grupo de até 4 pessoas.

Lugar excelente, de gente bonita e em uma das ruas mais charmosas de Ipanema. O local é divino e com um serviço maravilhoso. Os garçons são super atenciosos e os pedidos são, na maioria das vezes, servidos muito rapidamente.
O chopp sempre está extremamente gelado e acompanha muito bem a vista da praia.
O menu de bebidas é bem variado, sempre voltado para o lado boteco. Possui muita variedade em destilados, vinhos e cervejas e para quem curte muitas opções e formas para tomar gin.
As comidas também. Não deixe de provar as trouxinhas de rosbife e gorgonzola, meu favorito. Ainda é possível comer saborosos pratos, pra quem não quer apenas beliscar enquanto bebe.
Ah e pra quem curte pode se inscrever para ser cliente oculto do bar e depois avaliar serviços e atendimento.
