After a full day of beach bumming at Ipanema beach, my friend and I happened upon this restaurant. Entirely famished and in need of something quick, but tasty, we opted for one of their pizzas. It was amazing. Our waiter was good, perfect location and not too expensive. It was pizza, afterall. Enjoy!

This not just a restaurant, it’s the place where the second most recorded pop song in history was written! If you are a fan of the song«Garota de Ipanema», you must check this place out. My friend and I went there for drinks only, caipirinha, aka Brazil national cocktail. It was made right, pretty yummy, especially if you like lime. I saw other people ordering an interesting beef dish while I was there. It was a steak cooked on the table on a portable stove and a sizzling grill. Needless to say it smelt really yummy. Too bad I already ate then, would have ordered that beef dish. No, they didn’t play the song at the restaurant. Haha

I went to the restaurant because I was told«it was a must while visiting Ipenema» I would only recommend the restaurant because it has a large selection of Brazilian entrees. Truth be told I only checked this place out for a drink and dessert. I had dinner else where. The cocktail list is extremely limited. The location is extremely loud. My experience with the service wasn’t all that great. When I asked for a chocolate mousse I was surprised to get a prepackaged dessert from some other vendor. When I got my menu that looked like it had been used several thousand times(should be read as worn out) I could tell it was outdated or not kept up. My persuasion is that the restaurant has been a staple only because of name recognition and not because it’s really a great place to have dinner. I would say try other places nearby first. If you are looking for lively atmosphere there are plenty of other places around.

Q: When an infamous and enduring song is penned in a particular location and you have the opportunity to dine in that location is that enough reason to merit a visit? A: When the food is this meaty good, by all means, go. «Garota de Ipanema», if you hadn’t already guessed, translates into«Girl from Ipanema». It’s the site where the lyrics and music were penned, inspired by a young, beautiful Helô Pinheiro passing by each day en route to Ipanema Beach which is 1 short block from here. These days it’s a casual, inviting, open restaurant with musical instruments and musical scores on the walls and the enticing scent of meat wafting through the air. Between three diners we shared Feijoada(R$ 85), Lombinho a Gaucha(tenderloin + Portuguese Sausage, R$ 45), beer and wine, a meal which, had Helô Pinheiro consumed it with any regularity, there’d have been a lot more of her to «sway so gentle» when she passed by. No skimpy portions being served here. The grand total of our meal for 3(tax + tip included) was R$ 159 or about $ 40US. This is me just casting a vote here: Garota de Ipanema is a good place to eat. The three of us ate heartily, enjoyed our meaty meal and left sated. What more could one ask for? (Note: Helô Pinheiro went on to — of course — pose twice in Playboy. She has no stake in this restaurant but does own the bikini shop next door, also named Garota de Ipanema).

This place was busy! So we decided to stop in here for dinner after our long day of travel. We were HANGRY! We ordered to drink the Brazil specialty drink called — caipirinha muddled lime & vodka(too tart for me) but the boys drank it. We noticed most tables eating the Grill platters so we decided to try one too. Brazil is known for their grilled meat! It was a mixed meat combo of chicken breast & thighs, pork, sausage & steak it also included a side of rice, steamed veggies, salsa & some starch(not sure how to eat it). We ordered the cod coquette as an appetizer. There was so much food! It could have easily fed 6 people, we had a party of 3. The food was all very tasty! Service was great! The guys loved the meats so we plan to come back again before we leave.

If you are looking for a traditional Brazilian meat with reasonable price, this is the place to go. Strategically located in Ipanema i.e. a few blocks away from the beach and the shopping strip, this is a nice place to start your day. Food is decent and drinks are okay. Waiters, on the other hand, are not as accommodating as I expect. Maybe because I do not speak Portuguese at all and the whole ordering process might be tiring for them.

The Garota de Ipanema is only about three blocks away from the famous Ipanema Beach. So, we expected cheesy, overpriced«tourist food». Well, it was a bit pricey for the amount, but the Picanha(partially cooked meat that continues to cook at your table) actually was VERY good in taste and quality. The service was decent, but not spectacular. If we return to Rio any time soon, we may stop at the Garota again, but we probably will try some other restaurants and bars first.

If the service isn’t good, I’ll automatically take off a star. The waiters weren’t as cordial as you’d expect the to be in Rio, specially in such a hyped up restaurant. The food was good though. We ordered the Picanha that cooks at your table, rice, farofa and Bolinho de Bacalhau as an appetizer. The former was delicious. It was pricey, but well worth it. We asked for a side sauce, and they gave us a tartar sauce which made it even better. Good food, expensive prices, poor service.

Went to this place based on recommendations. We got the picanha, where the meat is partially cooked when it comes to the table and then it continues cooking at the table. The meat was very good, especially if you are ok with a little fat. Definitely enough for two people without ordering anything else as it comes with some sides. The rice had peas, ham and raisins in it, so I wish I would have just specified plain white rice. It could probably feed three people. We also ordered bolinho de bacalhau, which was good– but not as good as the picanha, which was very good. They brought free tartar sauce, which was nice. A couple slightly annoying parts: They tried to seat us in a corner when there were nice spots on the street corner to watch all the people walking to and from the beach. Also, the street artists who played by the window at our table… Even after we tipped them, they just asked for more.

I was expecting Rio de Janeiro’s Garota de Ipanema(«Girl from Ipanema») to be a dive bar or a tavern. After all, that’s where Antonio Carlos«Tom» Jobim regularly sat, ogled the«mossa do corpo dourado» quite a few times, wrote a song about her, and got the city’s international airport named after him. Well, it’s not a dive. It’s more uptown than that and so are the prices. It’s in a great location in Ipanema, one block inboard from Ipanema Beach and about three blocks from where the Metro ends its run in Ipanema. With bountiful breakfast buffets in Rio’s hotels and dinner plans, I wasn’t looking to drop any serious coin. A snack would have been ok. I saw a glass case that featured t-shirts. Who can’t use one, right? So I bought one. I was the proud owner of a t-shirt for a tourist stop and people back in the States commented on it, as in «ooh, that’s so cool.» The only problem is that it was of a cotton that shrank … and shrank, though NOT to the point of looking like Bruce Jenner’s combo of cut-off t-shirt and cut-off shorts from another era. I eventually used it to buff the car after waxing it. All good things must come to an end. For those of you who either don’t know, don’t remember, or could use a rehash, here’s the famous song this bar/eating establishment is named after: Cool, huh? Indeed. If you think you are«too cool for school» and above this song or genre of music, you’re not. This is an epic, timeless song. Also, the girl(garota, in Brazilian slang) from Ipanema turned out to be Heloisa Pinheiro, who went on to be a model and a businesswoman. I think her subsequent story is about a 180 degrees from that of the girl from Afghanistan with the piercing eyes who made the cover of National Geographic and was found and interviewed decades later. Put the Garota de Ipanema on your bucket list if in Rio de Janeiro. If not to eat, get a drink at the bar. If you don’t want to eat or drink, then just get a souvenir … like that t-shirt I bought. Heck, back in the homeland(SoCal), every kid from the O.C. and surfer with a leather face and slurred speech had a t-shirt from Hussong’s Cantina, which I am almost sure is in Ensenada and not in Tijuana. Whether you’re at Garota de Ipanema, in Ipanema, or in Rio, I can almost guarantee you will be hearing that song in your head!

This place is kind of on the must-do list when in Rio and the owners know it and therefore give you some pretty mid to low quality meat. The only thing to get here is the picanha because everything else is a disaster. Sometimes the picanha tastes pretty darn good, I must admit. Other times it’s just flavorless, chewy meat. They have a hot sauce that doesn’t have particularly good flavor but does pack some serious heat which is rare in Brazil. As others have mentioned, tips must be paid in cash so know that in advance. It’s a nice atmosphere a block off the beach and usually pretty busy. As long as you don’t have any expectations you will probably enjoy your experience here.

Most of the other reviews have pretty much covered what I’d say about this place, although I do want to emphasize it’s a must-visit for tourists. There is a sister restaurant in Urca(Garota da Urca) that has a better view and is in a more quiet neighborhood. — People come here for the picanha. It’s meant for two, and I’ve seen the waiter tell people sitting alone that they can’t order it. If you insist, he’ll give it to you, which is good because you’ll want to eat the leftovers later. — It gets crowded. Very crowded. — You have to tip the waiter in cash. They will not let you add it to the credit card statement. Be prepared for this. In fact, make sure he doesn’t add it to the statement anyway. — The sides with picanha are: french fries, an onion/green pepper/olive oil mixture(similar to pico de gallo) which is great with the meat, sawdust… ooops I mean farofa, rice. — I wouldn’t recommend eating anything else, so if the waiter absolutely refuses to give you picanha, get a steak instead.

What to do if at one time you knew Rio very well but haven’t been there in over 30 years, then arrive with only a couple hours of free time? The answer is simple, you go to Garota de Ipanema, have some picanha, down a couple of good caipirinha and savor in the memories, haunting rhythms and swaying sounds of bosa nova; a fusion of samba and jazz that so much captivates the spirit and feel of what is Rio. Originally«Veloso Bar,» its name was changed to Garota de Ipanema(read«Girl from Ipanema») in honor of the famous bosa nova song of that title by composers Jobim and Moraes though some say in honor of Heloísa Pinheiro whose charming(said by Moraes to be a «mixture of flower and mermaid») Carioca stylized samba like way of strolling that is said to have inspired it. Overall, Garota de Ipanema remains a lively and still inspiring place and, fortunately for those of us whose command of Portuguese has failed, has some English speaking staff. The food and the prices are about as good and reasonable as you’ll find in what is now this fashionable area of Rio. The menu is complete, actually some 9 pages long, but I tend to stick with their«Picanha Brasileira no Rechaud» which is a sliced Brazilian beef cut, not often seen outside of Brazil, of rump. But whatever your preference here, you really can’t go wrong.

When in Rio, I always stay in Ipanema. And when in Ipanema, I always stop by at least once at Garota de Ipanema. Most of the food I’ve had is really good, including the sandwiches(yep, that’s real filet mignon in that one). They serve a nice cold choppe and the caipirinhas are some of the better ones around. But where Garota de Ipanema really shines is with the picanha — sirloin that’s been BBQ’d on the outside and served atop a sizzling tray for you to finish cooking up slices of it. BTW, one picanha order serves 2 – 3 people, so the US$ 40 price tag is totally worth it, including that it comes with fries, farofa, salsa, and rice. After sizzling up a couple slices of the picanha, top them off with farofa & salsa, and maybe a couple drops of the malegueta pepper sauce(it’s in the tin with the tiny spoon, and since it’s oil soaking in what are basically tabasco peppers, excercise caution). Delicious. While the window seats are nice for view and ventilation, know that you will be solicited by beggars, people doing impropmtu samba sessions, fire jugglers, and guys doing caipoera in the middle of the street(OK, maybe those guys deserve a couple reais when they do backflips in traffic). Great place to stop by after a day at the beach(in the event you haven’t already loaded up with BBQ at Barraca do Uruguai… subject of another review). Beach attire perfectly OK. Beware that during the time around Carnaval, Garota constructs a special«Cardapio do Carnaval.» This menu follows the philosophy of the special Valentine’s Day menu you may have encountered in the US: smaller selection of dishes and higher prices.

Amazing beef on plate that we prepare by our own at our table! I took some American friends there and they went crazy about this place! And it’s not expensive, and very Brazilian! If you go for lunch on the weekend, you might listen to some street samba and in exchange have to give the guys a small tip.
